I was assuming they were traversing along the south ridge to ski s superior. and triggered the Monte Cristo slide along the way. ...doubt they had plans to drop MC but who knows.

Anyways pretty ballsy to be up there given all the wind we had the last few days.

That would be like skiing with a loaded gun pointed at the back of your head hoping a trigger-happy higher power isn't looking in your direction. I wouldn't have the stomach. I don't think I ever did, even in my dumber years.
I was at 10.5k on W facing last Monday and things were popping with the slightest provocation. The first pocket released exactly as expected but ran way bigger than I had planned, the second one lazily took out the skinner in a spot I've regarded as a safe ascent route forever. That spelled the end of the day for my partner and I, complete loss of confidence in our assessments in the face of a truly pissed off snowpack. Then it snowed over 6' with mad winds. I could see leaving some areas alone for a month right now before considering going back. And some people are standing on top of Superior?
I went skating in Round Valley today. Slid on snow, got some sun, didn't get lanched. Pretty psyched about it.

Almost all of Mt Superior is privately owned by Snowbird. I have no idea if that land has been transferred to powder corp or if it’s held by another associated entity for insurance reasons. The Country Lane stupidity in the last few years has been absolutely mind boggling. Almost all the other road side terrain up canyon in LCC is owned by the Bird or Alta. These idiots are just begging for their access to disappear. The Ikon idiocy is halfway sane compared to the absolute complete lack of sanity that has occurred in the backcountry community in the last decade. I really miss the days when storm skiing was done in the resort and a day or 2 later people got into the BC. Chilling and burning one with a stranger on top of a line vs the current who can transition faster to get first tracks stand off.

But the last week has been fantastic skiing. You can all thank me as I was so disappointed in conditions I bought some 86 underfoot park skis 2 weeks ago (haven’t skied them yet as the purchase unleashed Ullr).

Alta, Snowbird, Solitude, Brighton, Deer valley and Snow Basin are all Ikon. No matter what pass you have, it's all the same. Buying a season pass that is not Ikon just gets you more Ikon tickets for that mountain, whoopee.

Eternally the optimist, I will be at the bird Thursday morning. Ive been eyeing a well known feature off gad 2 if it's pretty deep. If it's not then hopefully I'll get to ride the cirque for the first time in 2 weeks.

So how are the resorts to the south and staying a night? What kinda average cost are we talking? That sounds much more enjoyable than the battle I read about daily.

oh yea and fuck the ikon pass.
I’m fortunate enough to get a pass through the Lady, works at Bird. Pretty sure we can still upgrade for $400. I love Snowbird but there’s the early season at Alta and they also seem to get more terrain open faster in big weather events. Maybe I’m just bitter I got skunked today.

Right there with ya, Fuck Ikon. These beaters don’t even know how good it used to be in LCC before they got here.

That Monte Christo business is nuts. I just don’t have that kind of risk tolerance, not even close.

The Millcreek slide crazy too. What an event.

Blame the ease of skiing pow on modern skis, can’t blame IKON. When I first skied Alta in ‘88 it was almost half tele, half alpine, all skinny. No powder frenzy ever. Rope drops these days are just stupid

And or Solitude.. Blame the Mormons and SLC for getting watered down and more liberal. The Olympics was the final straw.

    1. Everyone gets three free posts to bitch about whatever they want (gondola, red snake, how bad Salt Lake's food is compared to New York, whatever)
    2. If u post more stoke u get more bitchtickets
    3. If u are caught bitching after you have used your allotted bitchtickets, you will need to take a lap in the fartbag downsuit or I will flood your inbox with the hottest man meat pictures I have
    4. The only exception is for TFW who can bitch about whatever he wants for as long as he wants*

Plenty are at risk to wear the coveted fartbag downsuit. It gets really old reading the garbage spewed by some of you winey mofus ...oh wait; I gues that I am complaining about the complainers.

I'd still rather ski the wasatch than any other area in the CoUSA. Just be happy that you are not stuck in CO. or CA. I can't complain. I am an owner of both IKON and EPIC and think that it is the best bang for my buck.

Maybe next season we should have a new thread: "Bitch About The Wasatch"

SLC was going to blow up and this was going to happen eventually IMO, but IKON increased the clusterfuck exponentially. It changed the game overnight in LCC in 2017(?) or whatever the first year of the pass was.

So I'm not just collecting bitch tickets, I'll be inbound for a week in early Feb for a work/ski trip. Well, hopefully a little work and a lot of skiing. I'll do my best to post up some stoke and clog LCC with my green plates for a couple days.

Coming in this weekend for a work trip and have plans mostly set for where to go which day. Only question point is Monday, I have the afternoon only free. I've thought about Snowbird vs Brighton/Solitude vs just going for a low angle tour. Seeing the latest posts of Snowbird crowds makes me think there's basically no chance of getting up LCC and parking by noon-ish on Monday, no?

First season of Ikon was 2018-2019 season. Prior to that there was MAX pass, which gave 5 days at tons of resorts, including Solitude, Brighton and Big Sky. MAX eventually became Ikon. I came to Solitude on the MAX and the difference between MAX and Ikon didn't seem huge the first couple years; I definitely remember 18-19 and 19-20 being pretty chill, but maybe I'm just getting jaded. It's definitely been getting way more consistently crowded since COVID / Amber taking over (not sure which had the bigger impact).

Regardless, we still have it pretty awesome here. Great snow and rowdy terrain 30 minutes from a city, and we can it ski for like $10 a day. I get frustrated with lines too, but a couple bucks an hour for the thing that is more fun than anything else in my life? That's insane.

I read something in this thread last year that was fantastic. Someone said "you all talk about missing the good old days, but wake up. In 20 years these will be the good old days, so enjoy them while they're here". I wish I remember who posted that, because it totally changed my perspective (in a very good way).

Quoted because it needed to be said again. Quit your bitching and go skiing to collect some stoke. I hear South Face is in.

    I've been @ Soli since '91.
It was once an overlooked mom n pop type resort.
Boyne lost their funding last second to acquire Soli and Deer Valley swept in. That was the year the new Summit quad was to be built. Things started to change!
Then Deer Valley sold to Alterra, who then acquired Soli the next yr.(and DV owners move to start Wasatch Peaks instead)Things go from shit show to just plain overran.
Back when I had just plain Soli pass, they had the Wasatch benefit, which gave days to LCC resorts.
IKON base pass also gave birth to the multi pass LCC skier, who'll help clog up BCC when LCC closes after 2cm dump.

Their plan was almost certainly to ski Superior and not MC. What I meant was that apparently they remotely triggered that slide, watched it propagate 800 feet across the face of MC and run almost to the road, then decided, "OK, let's rip skins and descend Superior as planned." That's some wild decision making.

I'll say just one thing regarding Ikon that I don't think qualifies for bitch ticket status. All things being equal, Snowbird is noticeably less crowded during Ikon Base blackout periods, take that for what you will.

Yep, it’s very apparent to everyone I know, definite correlation.

Anyway, sorry for the bitchin, I think I’m out of tickets. Gonna buckle in for an Ikonic shitshow and head up in a minute.

Not stoke but this was my only view of the Monte Christo affair from the bottom of Zoom.

today is going to be a good day for those who can get it.

Yeah I was confused about what you meant about "downcimbing the ridge" ...re-read your post after I posted and then understood what you meant... Guess I never really thought about how to bail off Superior if you needed to. Maybe ski cut riders left down to Lil Sup?....downclimbing the ridge seems a bit gnar but doable.

Where they the first party down Sup.? Dont wanna speak for anyone but, Guessing they rationalized their decision by there were already tracks down Superior and the MC slide started on a opposite aspect W WNW compared to the S SE aspect of S Superior.....I could be wrong and not trying to justify anything ....Still tho, yikes. Wish they would've elaborated more on that in their report.

    Squallin HARD

Bird says no minral today, still digging out the tunnel. They posted pictures making it look like someone left the door open

Also topknot man is doing a state of the snowpack at the U tonight. I think I'm gonna go. I want to tour at some point this winter and the location is very convenient for me. I'll be in a salt lake city hat and huge black parka if anyone needs change.

Ikon bitchin is boring. It gives me the same brainwaves as someone ranting about how politicians all suck. We all agree and no one seems to be able to do anything about it, and the horse is well fucking dead at this point

Maybe it's 5 years, maybe 10, maybe 20, but in the not too distant future some combination of economics, climate change, over population, pollution, or apocalypse is going to make skiing not viable for most of the people on this forum. So go get some now for the sweet sweet memories when you're locked in your underground bunker in 2034

Doubt it. People have been predicting that shit for 100 years and they will for the next 100. If I’m still kicking in 30 years, I’ll bet I’ll be riding lifts in LCC.
