Feels like they were rushing to open. Hype and hubris.
I mean *KT22 opening tomorrow* gets splashed around.
Why not just open when it's ready, like most any other lift at most any other resort?

If you're talking about the guy we saw getting dug out in the deleted FB post they called him Jason.

You are right, I'm an idiot and read it as Jones while distracted. Apologies all.

Jeremy Jones is not the person in blue and was not buried/carried. I saw him at the base right when they were closing KT; I think he had just come down as well.

Very sad to hear that there might have been a fatality. That could have easily been me; I dropped in GS bowl ~10 min before the avalanche occurred. Fuck. RIP and my sincere condolences to family/friends.

so it wasn't the first group of skiers to get off the chair as has been reported? first came from the instagram skier666 linked and it looks like TGR has pulled from that

Hell. The Donner Ski Ranch incident in 2012 too. So tragic.

No it wasn't. I got on the lift around 9:05 and saw people ski down GS Bowl. Then proceeded to do the same myself. I did notice that they put a cat and fence right next to the patrol shack so you couldn't drop from right under the chairlift. On my way up for the second run, I saw the aftermath of the avalanche. At first I thought it was just a bunch of jerries digging themselves out after eating shit in the cream cheese snow. I only realized it was an avvy when I saw the crown right before unloading. It all happened fast, but I could swear I saw some tracks coming down the chute that was blocked off on my first run. So maybe they opened that (or someone ducked the rope?) and that's where it started. Based on the strong SW winds, my guess is a wind slab that might have stepped down to the PWL. Didn't look like it slid to the ground.

Glad you're alright. I would have been there this AM if school hadn't been canceled. I decided to work until ski team would have started. Interesting area for a slide. Not the first spot I would have picked, but it was probably loaded in there pretty good with a rotten layer. I'd like to see it.

RIP to the fallen skier. I wonder if more people will start to wear beacons inbounds. I have in the past and probably will in the future.

The start of this year has sucked in too many ways.

C'mon, Rose did the same thing for both NW & Zephyr this season and whenever The Chutes pop, you can bet they'll hype it and let everybody know the night before.

Tahoe '23/'24 - Reserve Now For Best Pricing!!!

Definitely very sad for that skier and their family. I’ve been first 10 chairs on many a KT powder day, could certainly have been me on any given ski day.

3-4 feet of snow on the way. I’ll be interested how they handle terrain openings now for the Holiday weekend

Might be rough season for Avie danger in Tahoe, icy layer with some rot that’s been sitting for a while (too long) though warming cycles and now we’re going to start piling heavy snow on top. Reminds me of home (Colorado).

I’ll be skiing with my pack, beacon, probe, and shovel for a while inbounds

It’s too early to draw any conclusions. But yeah, I don’t blame them for hyping KT22 opening. I also could see why they would want to get some skier compaction before the additional snow loading today/this weekend.

It was basically a backcountry snowpack until now and we know that snowpack had some PWL issues. I’m sure they bombed the shit out of it but turns out the public found just the right trigger spot (possibly combined with additional wind loading from the strong winds this morning).

Hoping that was a generic term and not a TGR handle.

My hazy memory says there was another inbounds slide & fatality on KT several years back. Bueller?

I saw this happen live. Was on the Treeline Cirque chair at the time and saw the slide take out a couple skiers right underneath the rocks/cliffs skiers left of Promised Land (the chutes between Scott Chute and Promised Land). If I remember, I think the person was strained through the trees below. I remember the conditions that day were spooky (at least for me) as it was about a foot (or more) of snow sitting on top of an ice rink.
