new uphill travel policy at 49N

    Fall and Winter of 2023-2024
Beginning November 1st 2023, Uphill Tickets and Passes will be required for all uphill travel regardless of the status of chairlift operations. Day tickets are available for purchase online and can be picked up regardless of the time of day at the ticket kiosk at the main base area. Approved routes are:
During chairlift operation- Big Bear to Huckleberry Ridge.
Outside of chairlift operations- Runs without snowmaking equipment or active grooming operations.
Uphill travel can be demanding and dangerous, please make sure you are adequately prepared, and do so at your own risk.

considering the current 7-day weather forecast,
    49N is making snow?

maybe just a training day ....

I'm moving to Spokane next month from Walla Walla, looking forward to more geographic diversity without the constant congestion and competition of the I-5 corridor. Bluewood is a fine local hill but it feels a bit claustrophobic and I've done enough chill touring laps on the old ski runs at Spout Springs to last me a lifetime - it's time to move on.

What I'm curious about is how many of you all regularly ski in the NE WA backcountry. I've done a fair amount of Hok skiing at Boulder Creek Pass (Nils and others in the Ferry County ski/outdoor community are awesome) and I've toured near the Stevens Lake trailhead off I-90 near Mullan, but I want to tour more in the WA Selkirks and Kettles specifically. Working at 49 a few years ago I didn't get the chance to do as much touring as I would've liked but now I have more time.

Some places I particularly want to get some turns in just for fun/exploration's sake include:
    -Mt. Bonaparte
-Sherman Pass (Columbia Mountain as well as Sherman/Snow Peak).
    -Copper Butte
-Calispell Peak (though I've heard the snowmobilers love it up there)
-Molybdenite Mountain (looks like some gnarly terrain on its NE aspect)
-Abercrombie and Hooknose Mountains (terrain looks great but access might be a challenge)
    and lastly
-Sullivan Mountain/Crowell Ridge/Gypsy Peak (great terrain but tricky accessibility as well)

If any of you all have insight about these places or want to ski them, feel free to reach out - or not, the unexpected can also have its benefits.

Have done a little touring in the area but not a ton. Stevens peak is great, which you know. I did a spring tour up near beehive (n Idaho) which was eh, looked like there was some cool terrain if our group was in better shape. Snowmobiles helped for accessibility, saved us a few miles. We did 2 nights at a FS cabin in way north Idaho, that was fun. Once again, cool terrain around but our group was hesitant and I didn’t want to push. I’d like to do some tours around Sherman pass, my parents live in kettle falls, but we’ll see. Will be curious to hear what you find. Good luck

Well, I succumbed to fomo and bought an Ikon pass even though I was pretty over the Spokane-Schweitzer commute last season. I'll be visiting fam in Bend a few times this winter, so it actually made sense, or at least that's what I'm telling myself. If anyone's interested in weekend carpools from Spokane, LMK. I'm all about schralping groomers so my feelings won't be hurt if you don't want to actually ride together once we're up there, just looking to cut down on the solo drives.

Day 1 on the books for me at Schwiz, some nice classic Schweitzer conditions with a bit of freezing fog and an inversion. 19 degrees on the drive up, 33 degrees and snowing in the lot, 19 degrees at the top of midway. WROD thin and narrow this year, off the WROD looked pretty grim.

Idaho. Close enough. Get your ass in a gotos and drive the length of the state.
