None of the players the sixers got are on long term deals, they are all expiring bench trash, and they moved the last year of PJ to the clips. Tobias expires this year. Maxey will be eligible for a max extension , but the reason they haven't reuped him yet is that doesn't count as a cap hold next season until they do, and they can use bird rights to go over the cap after they use the space they have, so they could have almost 2 max slots available. First time with flexibility in years .

The downside is like said above, it's a crappy FA class, and Philly has had a hard time getting straight up free agent signings in the past . That's where that 2028 Clips unprotected 1st and whatever the 2026 1st and pick swap come in. Sixers have to hope a good player or two shake loose this season so now they have assets (expiring contracts and 1st Rd picks ) to be in play to make a move.
Still makes this essentially a gap year, but at least the future isn't totally bleak now. Harden could have walked for 0 compensation this off-season, so this was about as good a return as possible for him

Bird rights and going over the cap ain't what it used to be. The punishments now are no joke, even to the point of making Joe Lacob flinch. This is as close to a hard cap as the NBA has ever had before. CJ McCollum and whomever else was involved really screwed the players association with this latest CBA... it kind of feels like they didn't really think it all through as deeply as they should have.

I don’t fully understand the new agreement, but it seems at least until there’s a market correction the stars are going to get the bag and many really good players are going to get the veteran minimum. Not what a union should advocate for.

20 y/o Shaedon Sharpe with 29/7/5 tonight against the Pistons.

Yeah, the Blazers suck but they are definitely fun to watch.

Yeah, that one hurt. Cunningham’s turnovers are getting tiresome. So far it looks like Detroit got the better of the Thompson twins.

The Cavs notched a regular season win over Golden State last week. That doesn't happen often despite how much they played in the Finals.

Doc Rivers should be sued repeatedly for malpractice seeing what Nurse is doing .

Not that it matters to the league but Blazers have already lost four of their better players to injury. The curse continues.

    Anfernee Simons
    Time Lord
    Malcom Brogdan
    Scoot Henderson

Time Lord was only a matter of... time. And it sucks, because I really like that guy. Proves it's all business and Celtics moved a liability off their books, but damn, that's cold. I guess I wasn't paying attention to Brogdon's injury record. I liked having him to bring off the bench in Boston.

I'm concerned that Boston may wear out Big Al if they don't pace him early season. Even though they have two Ls in a row, I'm liking their lineup. Holiday was an amazing find. I guess I didn't pay attention to him before so I was like who's that when the trade happened. Porzingis will grow on me. It's interesting seeing Hauser get so much time. I've always liked Pritchard.

Pritchard is deep in his own head. Hopefully he comes out of it because his point guard skills really have improved. Hauser’s defense has continually improved. Agree on Big Al, Celtics need him by playoff time to be good. Last year he clearly was tired and after effort exerted on defense, his legs weren’t there for three point shooting. Maybe the two way guy can come in, but Celtics will definitely be looking for a big come January 1 assuming everyone is healthy.

Unfortunately both Rob Williams and Brogdon are both injury prone. At the time I felt the Celtics overpaid with two firsts for Jrue Holiday given last year of his contract (player option next year, but that’s just an injury placeholder), but was ok given cost of keeping away from Miami and Philadelphia. Now thinking it was likely to compensate for injury risk to those two.

One more high draft pick and Portland could have a team to build.

Holy shit. Holiday on the Heat or Sixers?!?!? Boston would be fucking toast. Of course, I wonder if Jimmy Fucking Butler could have handled that. Glad all I have to do is wonder.

Motherfukker! Was harden in philly last night? Oubre walking in center city last night...struck by a motorist, will miss significant time. Just released from hospital...no details yet on injury(s).

Good news is he’s out right away. Oubre has really fit in well with Philadelphia. I was hoping the Celtics would sign him last offseason. Celtics really need a big with strength. Maybe the two way guy they signed will fit in. Looked good in preseason, but stress fractures in the foot are never a good thing. Sure Stevens is working the phone lines. Likely nothing shakes loose before the first of the year.

What are your impressions of the in season tournament. My initial is it gives some excitement to the early season. Money grab for sure, but seems all pro sports are and so you either accept it or move on from the sport.

2023/2024 NBA THREAD: WHO WANTS TO GO ON PARADE?!?

Wait are we talking about the same Oubre who had wide open looks in Golden State, couldn’t make a damn thing, then complained he really never had a chance for success? Glad he’s ok but he’s not going to be a game changer for any team.

As for the in season tournament I figure hey it’s worth a shot. I don’t care about super rich guys making more money but for some of these teams there are players at the end of the bench or on vet mins with the potential of making 250 - 500k, so it does add a little intrigue. And I feel like the stars might want to win it for those guys.

Definitely a tough loss for the sixers. Oubre was having a great season (16 ppg on 50% shooting) as stated above plus he is on a great contract for the sixers. I hope he heals up quickly and comes back to the same level he was playing at this year.

In season tourney is awesome and I think all nba players regardless of salary are motivated by the half million prize money and title/NBA cup trophy. You don’t make the nba not being ultra competitive. And the way some players gamble, I think any amount of money is motivating…. Plus I like the floors and jerseys, seems like a good way to gain some attention during the early season when most sports fans are locked into football.

I hate football. I like anything that gets the lowest paid players in any sport more money. I'd like it better if it forcibly impoverished the owners and other non-player fat cats at the top. Ya, I got a mile high working class chip on my shoulder. I can honestly say I did not like Boston's floor. I found it butt ugly and distracting.
