ERV idea is something very interesting
So is the CO2 check but I sincerely doubt that's it

Shutting the door doesn't work cuz the cats gotta get to the litter box. Even if I moved that to the bedroom closet (yuck) instead of a closet under the stairs, opening the window has the noise issue (and I haaaaate earplugs).

I'll start with ceiling fan + air purifier and see what that gets me.
I'll also try to improve the heated kitty beds to see if they'll both go for that.

I very much appreciate all the responses. I'll work on some kitty pics.

We have hydronic heating in the slab, with an HRV handling the ventilation. With the bedroom temperature set relatively cool (17/62.6), it seems pretty ideal for my wife and l (but for her hot flushes, but that’s a menopause rabbit hole of it’s own). I knew (they’ve since passed) friend’s parents that liked to sleep cold, so maintained a bed on their screened in deck, which they used in our mountain town on all but the coldest winter nights. Seemed like a good solution, with no absurd heating bill.

The ERV will solve this issue but it’s not gonna be cheap necessarily

Panasonic makes a low volume prepackaged unit for $500, but you still have to install it in a concealed space via a wall or ceiling and port out thru the exterior wall/roof without subverting your weatherproofing.

Sounds like an install into the attic/exterior wall above the bedroom and probably not a DIY job.

Sounds like I should probably see if the fan / temp improves things first.

Window open is not an option, even if a blanket is used for a bedroom door which allows cat passage, but limits cool air into house?

I could hang a blanket or even cut a cat door into the bedroom door.

But it doesn't solve the exterior noise issue. I'd have to sleep with earplugs.

    yes

[further, for others reading, the ERV & its ducts want to be INSIDE the thermal envelope of your structure, not in a cold vented attic]

In our house, the wife (me) controls the temp. And that definitely includes sometimes having a window open at night. Also a fan (pointed away from me) going, and - what you need- a sound machine with white noise. Any woman over, say, 40, can have crazy body temp regulation issues. Don’t spend a lot of time and money trying to correct the air, especially since she’s used to an open window. She’ll probably prefer the window open anyway. Get a sound machine to drown out outside noise, turn on a fan (not a ceiling fan which blows directly on you, a regular one that you can point towards you or away). Then take a gummy and sleep like a baby. You’re welcome. (preferably a gummy with THC and CBD, but CBD only if u can’t do THC).

Sound machine has to be cranked up sleep-disrupting loud to drown out unmuffled jake brakes with the window open. I've tried.

The humidifier is/was the white noise generator for when the windows are shut.

Usually humidifiers aren’t very loud. Would a fan on high be louder?

I've used my cellphone as a white noise generator. It has to be unpleasantly loud if the windows are open. Like loud enough I might choose earplugs and I hate earplugs. The problem is extreme transients (5 seconds of unmuffled jake brakes for a gear shift 2-3 times a night), not constant noise. It is hard to block that with white noise when the window is open. Too much low frequency.

I used to be very anti-ear plugs but have softened in middle age. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Personally, I think I would prepare another cat free warm and quiet sleeping area and go to bed with your girlfriend with the window wide open every night to mysteriously wake up somewhere quiet that you can sleep i.e. the guest bedroom. Sneak back in early if you think there’s a chance for some action.

Room air purifier creates white noise and is significantly cheaper than some of the other suggestions here. It moves the air without directly blowing on you, a bit like a ceiling fan. If the goal is less stuffy, it would be worth a try on it's own before installing a ceiling fan.

All of these. Sorry. ....jake brake sound hard to cover. You're fucked. This might be the end of the relationship.
