lol
It's a goddam needle in a haystack, so I just have to be patient.
There's one that meets my criteria (mostly) not far from me, but the dealership apparently thinks their car is made of gold. Based on what I see -- which is of course just list prices and not sale prices -- it should be listed at maybe $32-33k. They had it listed at $41k, so I didn't even bother contacting them. They dropped the list price this week to $36k so I did contact them, but said their price was still way too high and were they going to come off that. They asked by how much, I told them the above (it should be listed at maybe $32-33k) and they said they couldn't come that far.
So I have to just keep waiting.

Danno sounds like Corwin Toyota aka Boulder Toyota? Their used car prices are dumb. Tried to negotiate one or two a few years ago before realizing it was a losing battle.
I found Dannos new ride.

For those of you that have traveled a distance to purchase a used vehicle from a private seller what do you do about insurance for bringing it home? Especially when it isn't an up front guarantee that you'll be purchasing.
You can (and should) confirm with your insurer, but generally, your existing auto insurance covers you driving other vehicles - such as if you borrow a car or rent a car. It'll cover you on a new/used car until you have a reasonable opportunity to add it to your policy.
If you feel extra concerned, and pick up the new used car during insurer business hours, you could call immediately after purchasing and add the car to your policy.
I usually get the upfront quote by email. Then tell the agent I'll email them back if I purchase. I figure the email back will be time stamped for coverage.

Having done it twice now in recent history, it was really, really easy. Fighting insurance companies is hard enough as it without having to worry about grace periods and what not so I didn't risk anything. What I did was call my insurance company for a quote on the vehicle of interest, supplying them with VIN and everything else they'll want, and then they save the quote on their end. As soon as I completed the transaction with the seller, I called the insurance company and they activated the policy and e-mailed me insurance ID cards within seconds.
Even if I was technically covered by an old policy, the LAST thing I wanted was to get harassed by Sheriff Buford T. Justice for not having proof of insurance on said new vehicle when making the journey from Florida to Texas. The potential hassle of it all just doesn't seem worth it when it's so easy to get quotes/activate policies these days.

Seriously. ESPECIALLY for those of us with such specific tastes, which is most this crowd. Haha. I've had to shop nationwide for my last 2 cars and fly one-way each time. Was honestly pretty painless working with the sellers. The sellers for my Mercedes were particularly lovely to work with. SSSOOOOOO much better than what I'd dealt with before on CL/FBM. Seems Autotrader sellers seem to skew older, non-bots, and are ACTUAL private parties, not crappy wholesalers flipping junk cars pretending to be private parties. I think having to spend like $50 on the ad tends to keep the riff raff away.
FWIW, I used the Autotrader app and set up alerts with my parameters and would get daily updates with new postings. Be prepared to hop on it with cash/cashier's check when you find your unicorn.
Shopping STILL super sucks these days though, Danno's got that right.
I am curious about how y'all verify the condition of the vehicle long distance. I get that you can arrange a mechanic to look at it, but what about all the things like scrapes and scratches and the functioning of all the features? Do you trust pictures or the seller to show you everything? Or do you just suck it up and deal with anything that goes wrong?

That's where we have to count on the seller to be straight up. The listing pictures for my Mercedes weren't very good, so after we touched based and talked over the phone, they e-mailed me tons more photos in full quality and took special care to send pics specifically of every scratch, ding, faded trim, and other imperfections. That helped build some trust.
Furthermore, they had paid for a PPI at their indie (and locally very reputable) Euro shop who I spoke to about the maintenance history, but they were also more than happy to take it to a dealer or anywhere else for another PPI. Again, great sellers who were very up front with me and represented the car accurately. Didn't dick me around at all. Super cool folks. Wish they could all be like that. Either way, my experiences with private parties on car's I've bought have consistently been WAY better than dealers no matter what.
I've shown up locally, or sometimes a 110 mile drive, and found the truck to smell of cig's pisses me off enough locally, but to fly for that I'd fight for my travel $ back. Lying bastards.
I learned to drive where that movie was filmed... in a Bonneville. Buford made more than a few calls to my dad when I was in high school.
My wife has worked in auto insurance for the last 20 years. Ima trust her.
Edit: It was the same color too.
Still have the window sticker and the hood ornament.
