Otherwise I agree with Snapt, the high elevation west offerings just aren’t that great in comparison.

This has been my experience to a T. I bought a bottle of WW when they first came to market and I was floored at how bad it was. Will definitely need to revisit.

They brought in Nancy Fraley a few years ago to sort out some QA/QC issues and she built their current blending program to improve and maintain consistency in their batches. She probably also sorted out some issues in their fermentation since that’s in her wheelhouse.

It’s a reliably decent product now, although I prefer their Outryder. (The story behind that product is a good one- Steve Nally, their original distiller came from Makers and hadn’t worked with rye fermentation, and didn’t want to do it. He screwed them- when they went to bottle their first batch they found it wasn’t 51% rye.) But it’s more than I want to spend for it regularly, since I can get Russel’s Reserve rye for 50% less anywhere I am.

Oh yea, they are still making it. More than ever according to the tour guide at the distillery. I just picked some up from my local Total Wine.

    Agreed

I’ll defer to a distiller but half the reason the whiskey is so good from KY/TN besides the limestone water is the climate. You need that hot humid summer air, and cold winter air and all the changes you get with 4 full seasons to force the juice in and out of that new oak. You don’t have that at altitude.

How is the Jefferson’s that they age all around the world on a ship? Seems like a total gimmick.

I drink it. Overpriced, but smooth and very tasty. When the UT. stores ran out of Blanton's I started drinking this. IMHO, better than 1792, Woodford, Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, Knob and Makers. Comparable to Eagle Rare, JD small batch and Blanton's. Not as good as Weller.
If you are going to spend $80 for Rendezvous, you might as well spend $80 for Jeff. Ocean.

As inconsistent a bottle as you’ll find.

I was gifted a bottle of Voyage 3 which was amazing. Tasted like salted caramel.

Also true, especially because the mash bills and bottling strength is different for each voyage.

I shared a bottle of Voyage 12 that a friend brought to a tasting one night and was really underwhelmed.

I don't think it commands the price at all. Regular old Jefferson's is fine.

I was gifted a Voyage 4 and it was somehow complex flavor wise but really thin, which is probably consistent with any young whiskey aged at sea for a year.
I wouldn’t pay retail for it, and haven’t really sought the others out because of it.

IIRC the early Voyages weren't $80+ a bottle either. I think you could routinely find them for $10-15 more than the regular Jefferson's offerings.

I have half a bottle of Act Ten, Scene 4, that I will give to the first person to show up at my door and says, "change for a rupiyaa".

Just the bouquet makes me cringe.

The reserve is the sweet spot in the Jefferson portfolio in my opinion- Not as good as it used to be when it was a 15 yr but still pretty good and more consistent, better value than the Ocean

I'm seeing act 11 going for $190-$200 on a local bourbon trading group (tons of bottles available, not a lot of takers). Hard pass even at half that. Like PB above, I still have an open bottle of 10.6 which will take me at least another year to kill.

Putting the price aside, the above bottle of Act 11 tasted pretty damned smooth and delicious. Would I buy another bottle for $125? That is a lot of coin for any bottle of anything in my mind.

Constellation is the "Vail" of the spirits industry. Everything is overpriced. Rob Sands definitely did some research into HW before purchasing it. HW and Vail in the same town is a match made in heaven.

Agreed. Woodford is my daily driver, but when I want to mix it up, Jefferson's Reserve, Weller Special Reserve and Eagle Rare are at bat, on deck and in the hole. All can be had pretty reasonably.

Sorry, but can't get into High West or Yellowstone.

Latest go to is Elija Craig Barrel Proof C923.

Did do a shot of Stagg 23A last evening for a friend at his celebration of life. Fuck Alzheimer's.

That c923 batch is mighty nice. Even with the most recent price increase, Elijah barrel proof is still the best value in domestic whiskey today

The Yellowstone store picks are really good! I've heard their American Single Malt is a really good bottle if you're into that kind of thing. Their yearly special releases at $100 blow away most MWND, Birthday Bourbon's etc. And they usually just languish on shelves at MSRP.
