You can fit a whole quiver's worth of tele skis in the passenger seat with the top down.

Here's something a bit more classic in your range of criteria:

Imagine how cool you'd look unpacking all that tele gear from your well-kept 70s Series LC.

Danno, would you consider a Honda Pilot with some light roof damage?

Most basic criteria: must have a towing capacity of at least 6000.

Danno I think I’ve mentioned but I dumped my ‘06 100 series for an ‘11 Land Rover and I just did the cost comparison 2.5 years into ownership. Despite Toyotas being “so reliable” I spent more in maintenance in the first 2.5 years on the LX470 than on the LR4. Yes the LX had 181k miles when I bought it and yes the chance for catastrophic failure is higher on the LR, but man you can find LRs cheap (LR3 particularly).

Oh and I bought the LX (sight unseen) on CarMax in Florida, and had shipped to CO. Will never buy from them again. Many, many undisclosed issues. Mice having eaten through seat leather was a fun one.

I’d do a doubletake if I walked by someone unloading dirtbag tele gear from a Land Rover.

Thanks for the info. I have a Sequoia and have been very happy with it, and it perfectly fits my needs. So now that I have decided to upgrade, rather than go through the brain damage of massive research to determine what other cars might work, I am opting for the simplest solution which is just to buy a newer one. But finding it is the rub.

Hey, $12K for a vehicle that gets me anywhere. I’ll drive it for another 5 years and sell for a few $K less than I paid.

    Pontiac, goddammit.

Danno, get a 99-06 Silverado or Sierra 2500 4x4. Or a Suburban (or Yukon XL) 2500, same vintage. Pull anything. Sleep in, on, or under it. With your budget of $30K, a purchase price of $5-10K leaves you ample money for gas and parts.

You can drop comprehensive and collision coverage, so your remaining insurance bill will save even more money. Annual registration is also dirt cheap.

    This, obviously, is the way.

why would I get one of those if I have a 2006 Sequoia that I am happy with, but am looking for an upgrade?

Hey man that’s awesome, honestly, if you can rock one for that price and it works more power to you.

I’m still emotionally, scarred by my prior ownership of a Discovery Series II.

Because this is TGR, where we recommend what we own.

And because you ignored all the RV bike rack input you were getting, so now is the time to recommend all sorts of shit.

Have you considered the benefits of fractional ownership in a brown manual diesel wagon?

Because this is TGR, that is of course a complete mischaracterization of that thread. I posted about a bike rack that had already been purchased and installed on the trailer by my girlfriend, and asked if anyone had used it and if anyone had any tips for its use. The answer to the first seemed to be a resounding no, and the "tips" I got were "ditch that janky looking thing" and do roof trays. Which I wasn't willing to do without at least using it once (because girlfriend), but after using it once ditched it for roof trays. If that's ignoring your input then so be it.

Want to buy a bike rack?

Here's the flip side to Carmax & Carvana: I sold good cars to both of them. Neither ended up in their inventories due to being beyond their age/mileage cutoffs. Back then, Seattle Carvana actually operated out of the Manheim Auction lot. So that car for sure ended up on a dealership lot, and the next buyer had no idea that I hadn't just traded it in there.

My brother sold a fairly new Acura MDX in great condition to Carmax last year. They detailed it and put it right on their lot. Aside from paying too much, the next owner got a solid vehicle with a clean history.

Bottom line it's always a crapshoot, and it pays to be extremely skeptical.
