Hang in there, bud. I know you're doing the best you can til you can get back up again. Sorry I didn't give you my old Volvo, but I would've felt bad if my "free" car ended up turning into an expensive nightmare for you too since it was no spring chicken at approaching 1/4 million miles.

Have you given any thought to the Element mentioned above? I know they're quirky but they were honestly pretty rad for what they are. Had an ex-gf with one and it was darn reliable, you could open up the sides and hose out the plastic interior, you could get them with AWD/MT, and would actually be PERFECT for your needs with the available cargo space. They're slow and don't get great MPG, given it's basically a largish vehicle on a Civic platform, but from a utilitarian perspective I gotta respect 'em. Kinda wish Honda still made something like that.

We owned one for several years. There's a lot to like about them, but the suicide doors get old and the 2+2 seating makes them mildly terrible for people hauling.

Probably why the old guys preferred the land-yacht trunks. Any clunking around could be blamed on road noise or vapor lock. Much harder to explain away those noises from the roof box.

I get it. It's all good. Yeah, I'm not gonna throw cash at high mileage stuff this time around, I'd rather milk this pos for a while than deal with another one with stuff wearing out. The other thing is we need it or something similar with an 8 foot interior length but it's not right for an everyday vehicle. I need small, ez to park and high mpg (preferably 35 or better) so that takes the Element out because it's not big enough to replace a minivan and it misses on a bunch of other points.

So, there's a car I'm interested in at CarMax. Is it a positive that they have it, a negative, or neutral? I mean, I know there are no guarantees, but do they pick and choose their cars, give em a good once over, or is it just random? I know they do the no haggle price thing, but that's all I know.

I've sold 2 cars with known impending doom to Carmax and have smiled happily as the check cleared.

Carmax still takes those to auction which are then given a nice detail and sold on the independent corner lots across America. Carmax plays the volume margin play on much of what they take in. Buy at less than private party sale (read: wholesale) and try and sell for a margin above that at auction.


Afaik Carmax only keeps the "true" gems to sell on their own lots.

This is where we need Bobby back.
