Oh, I think the whole thing was handled terribly. I think there was a lot of space for him to clarify or repudiate the worst implications of his comment and that never happened. I'm not sure that being Jewish counts much when one is calling people protesting for social change Nazis. He also didn't really cover himself in glory becoming an armchair COVID expert and using his platform to spread views well outside his expertise, which also contributed to a lot of my personal feelings for him.

The protesters broke windows and left the street covered in glass shards, hence the reference. I don't remember him actually calling them Nazis (can't read the article now).
    He did clarify his remarks.

Regarding his COVID stance, this seems pretty well reasoned.

Overall, I think he gets a bad rap.

Anyway, no big deal, back to stoke and anticipation for the coming year.

The thing I like about Cliff is that he backs up all his (weather and climate-related) posts with actual data.

Cliff is not afraid to voice his opinion which is informed by his view of things as defined by the data that is accessible to him. I get a little tired of his Seattle Times retorts, but I learn so much from his blog that I give him a pass. I don't think he'd be out of place as a contributor to the padded room.

10/11 and 11/12 were La Nina years. 10/11 was above-average snowfall and 11/12 was average.
09/10 was EN and the season total was +6" over 11/12. I'm sure the skiing was better in 11/12 because it snowed 48" during March compared to 11" 03/2010.

Historically, La Nina years trend a little higher than El Nino years at MR. Some of the worst years have been EN (04/05.)

Wow. I hadn’t followed that. That’s bullshit. His comparison wasn’t wrong.

Sure he posts data, but take a look at his current post on the drought monitor. Lots of data, but zero discussion of what metrics the agencies use to measure drought, when they release updates or any actual discussion of why the drought monitor says what it says currently, just a jump straight to "There are few better examples of the dissemination of exaggerated and inaccurate information than the drought claims of the U.S. Drought Monitor, the combined effort of several U.S. Federal agencies."

To be fair he has discussed it before and one of his main gripes is that their methodology isn't published.

I find this hard to believe, but a simple FOIA would resolve his issue.

I find his analysis of weather patterns to be quite useful, but he comes off as hysterical when it comes to posts like his latest.

Perhaps, but it does seem a bit problematic for a government agency to publish a "drought monitor" and not also explicitly explain what data were used and how.

Jumping from "they don't publish their methodology" to accusing them of "dissemination of exaggerated and inaccurate information" is a bridge to far for this guy.

Cliff does seem like a dick, but he does also make good points. I like reading his stuff but feel like others that he discounts the probabilistic contribution of climate change to extreme weather events too much. But I also think he is just bitter over Daniel Swain's media success. Swain is everywhere now because he is young, nice, and reinforces the climate change party line and I think Cliff hates that.

It's been a great trip with far more sun than clouds so far. I spent almost every summer as a kid on the Island but don't get up here to visit as much as I should. In 1939 my Grandpa bought two-75 ft sections of waterfront property on the South end of the Island for $155.00.
One was $80.00, the other $75.00. I can still remember my Grandma talking about how much money that was during the depression.
It's been in the family ever since.

Winter crabbing has just re-opened as well and coincided with some minus tides. Lights of Seattle are visible down the sound.

Got these two keepers in less than 5 minutes at the end of the tide flats. Super nice night out, no wind with mild temps.

None have been so bad that I wept. I did weep when my Lhasas bit the dust. I’m looking forward to this season. Mission is where folks like Cliff Mass go when there is an El Niño. I’ll try to find that photo that I like so much from ‘09/‘10.
