Also thanks, Cy. My DWT is a cold dead hands ski for sure. Thanks also for the DWT104 review.
I'm a Moment fanboy, but I'm definitely irked by their marketing of the DWT104. All the media copy is pretty snarky about how they made a great ski (DWT`106) and nobody wanted it, and how we're all idiots for wanting a narrower DWT again, but everything I've read about the DWT106 was that it wasn't a great ski at all.
So they come out with a DWT104 which is great, but make it basically a replacement for the failed Commander Tour which means it's porky. I'm sure it skis really great but I've chatted with multiple people that really wanted the DWT112 in a spring ski package (lighter weight and narrower but most of the same characteristics except pow float). I think they could have done that and hit it out of the park with everybody that isn't a skimo spandex dork that wants something that skis well for touring in mixed conditions. The touring market has also changed a ton since 2018 when they last offered the DWT106.
I'm certain they could have taken a 112 which weighed 1730 in a 184, shaved 10% off the width, which would save slightly less than that in weight so its still stiff and reasonably damp, and had an insanely great ~100 waisted ski with triple camber that weighed in around 1550-1600g.
If 179 works for you, the Sierra Tour is exactly this.
ETA: I loved the Underworld/DWT 106 and skied the hell out of it. Others' opinions may vary and ski construction has no doubt improved since then, but I thought it was great ski. If I could get my hands on a Ghost Train Tour to add to the ST and DWT 112, my touring quiver would be complete forever.
Regarding the marketing, perhaps the implied eye-roll is a little directed at you, but no more so than the rest of us fanboys nitpicking great products while constantly asking for more tweaks (see my GT Tour dream above). I find the email hilarious personally, just some good-natured ribbing that we deserve.

I’m starting to think about a replacement touring ski for my 184 v-werks katana. Is the deathwish tour 112 it? Cy’s review of the 104 makes me think it may be close. I like most everything about the katana but something a little lighter would be nice. Can anyone compare the two?
I also really like the QST106, but it’s too heavy and not wide enough for mid winter touring.
I cannot compare the v-werks katana, but I can attest that the DWT 112 is great for skiing pretty much all year (and especially mid winter) in the Tetons. It's my favorite touring ski ever. I wouldn't personally want to go more narrow.
I'm 5'11, 200 lbs and ski the 190. Also, the voyager binding is really nice.

So this didn't make it into the review because, like so many of my thoughts, it's relevant to the people in this thread, and basically no one else. When the DWT 112 was announced I couldn't imagine a world in which I didn't have one mounted up as my primary touring ski. That's held true. for years. But, now, with the advent of the DWT 104, I can 100% imagine getting rid of my 112s, and combining a 184 DWT 104 with realistically a Wildcat Tour in 190, or unrealistically, a 186 Ghost Train Tour as my ultimate touring quiver. (Side note, this imaginary Ghost Train Tour should be really light, like 1600g, because nobody cares how it does in variable snow)
Have you put any time in on a Sierra Tour? You mentioned it in your DTW104 review a couple times, and it's been mentioned as a narrower lighter DTW112 alternate in this thread a couple times, but I can't find any real skier input on it other than a Blister First Look and the specs from Moment.
I'm looking for a spring Cascade ski where days are regularly 15+miles and 7000+ vert on 2D snow, often very firm climbs with ski crampons (which I don't have to tell you sucks on a 112 ski), and am really tired of lugging 1750g of DWT112 with me, but also not thrilled with the ~1400g crop of skis that usually fill this slot. That's where I'd hoped the DTW104 would slot in, but if I'm not saving weight other than on my narrower skins, it doesn't pencil out for me. I'm concerned with the Sierra Tour being flexed considerably lighter than the DWT if it's made for a lighter female skiier (I'm 200lbs in ski gear).
I haven't unfortunately. I'm sure Melee or someone who actually builds the skis can actually chime in with the layup/core profile difference.
For me, the big reason that I haven't been on the Sierra Tour in that shorter length is that I still see it as sort of a marginal gain. Having skied really light skis, saving just 100 or so grams per ski just doesn't do it for me. If I really care about efficiency, then yeah, I want to be on something in the 12-1400 gram range. But for something that's still 1600ish grams, I can save that sort of weight elsewhere.
Maybe one day.
We actually made these skis towards the end of last season for a bunch of heli ops and guides.
Knowing that the name "Comi" would certainly ruffle some feathers with the state of affairs in the world these days we opted to use the graphic that had blue and yellow colors.
When we came out with the Sierra Tour a lot of folks realized that the 179 at 104mm underfoot was essentially a DWT104 before it actually existed to the public.
That being said there are two key differences:
- The Sierra Tour uses a Paulownia/Pine wood core versus the Paulownia/Beech wood core in the DWT104. There is a bit of a weight penalty with the Beech being in the DWT104 but it makes the ride so much better we had to run with it. The wood difference in turn makes the DWT104 a bit stiffer
- The sidecut and mount point on the DWT104 is 1cm back which doesn't sound like much but it does make a nicer turn and taken from the geometry developed on the stock DW104.
We did stop making the Sierra Tour and all other womens specific touring skis this season because they were always just shorter "mens" touring skis with a different top sheet. Instead, we expanded the size options for the DWT104 and WCT108 so they still exist.
He’s saying there *were* 2 key differences. When there were 2 skis to compare.
See the last paragraph for current state.
Ski Burger seems to have gotten last years products. Tons of sizes!
Is the commander tour dead?
Commander tour is rad. Everything I want in a heavy duty mountaineering ski, but lighter layup.

Question for the group.. I've got a pair of 2020 wildcat 108s on their last legs (couple small edge cracks and about a pound of ptext in the bases), have been daily driving them for 3 years, absolutely love the ski. I also have a pair of commander 108s I got last season - I like them (way better once I detuned the tip/tail), but don't love them? I just feel like I never grab them over the wildcats.
I ski fast but in a surfy/slarvy way, 5' 7" 160lb and ski ~180 skis. Usually mount moments +2.
Should I replace the wildcat 108s, or should I try the countach?
Will probably sell the commanders if anyone is interested, 182s, skied 5-10 times, mounted for pivots but will likely sell flat.
Thanks!
That’s some old Ben Kanobi shit right there! Great reply!
