Does Maxxis have a long term plan to replace EXO with the EXO+? It seems ridiculous to have both, considering the weight and price are very close between the two.

It seems identical EXO vs EXO+ 27.5 DHR2's are about 1/4lb different. I'd consider that a significant difference, but YMMV.

Yeah, it’s not nothing, but the variation between the same Maxxis tires can sometimes be 50-80 grams. Not far from the difference between exo and +. It just seems that most buyer would prefer the + version and they could simplify the product line.

Why are the Conti fronts only available in 2.4?

I have a 29x2.6 rear enduro in the mail, but if I like it and decide to replace the front Assegai as well, I'm not sure a 2.4 will work great with my 35mm rims.

And the rear is coming from jensonusa who price-matched Amazon but offered faster shipping (despite having Prime...)

I bet that Krypt rear 2.6 would work fine as a front, and be pretty dang fast!

Seems like the Conti Xynotal has the best hope of being a Dissector replacement for me for a rear in midsummer dry, fast, not too loose conditions? But hopefully way more durable! The tread looks very similar in pattern and block height … I’ll have to order one up some point soon!

I ordered some Kryptotal Enduro Soft Front 29x2.4 from BikeInn and they just shipped. So they may have more in stock.

I'm doing an XC race (75 miles, 10k vert, mostly non-tech singletrack) in a couple of weeks and need new tires. Currently running maxxis dissectors front and back, which seem decent so I could keep running these (or even swap front to back and put the new tire on the front). But wondering if I should consider something else....

I've never run a true race tire like the aspen or recon race and tbh, the low profile knobs sort of scares me when I think about how i corner. But what about a maxxis dissector up front with a recon? dual specialized ground controls? Schwalbe rocket rons or racing rays? or is the Vittoria Mezcal the answer?

Lots of chatter on this thread in favor of Forekaster and Syerra too. I have no firsthand experiences or other comments, but the Dissector probably seems overkill for an XC race. I imagine loose, loose over hard, or hard soil will sway your optimal choice, as will what you plan to do with the tires after the race (keep them on full time?).

yes, I plan to keep running them. I'm just doing the race to do it, no goal or hope to finish well, just want to enjoy a full day pedaling my bike around, but I need new tires so may as well get something faster rolling "for the race". Definitely don't need to dump a lot of money in race-specific tires but dissectors seem like overkill, as you mentioned, and need to be replaced.

guess I'm looking for more of a fast trail tire...... ride in Utah and Colorado for the most part.

I've been pleasantly surprised with the stock Rekon that came on the rear with my Genius. I figured I'd switch it out first thing for my usual go-to dual DHF set up, but I've actually liked the performance in the both loose & hardpack riding both trails and bike park laps at Powder Mt. As one would expect, noticeably faster as well.

If I were in your boat I would probably just replace the rear with a Rekon and call it good.

What are you running on the front? I have thought of dual rekons...... but I'm leaning towards the mezcal now. idk

Thunder Mountain is running a sale, 10% off sale items. Just picked up a Xynotal Enduro Soft 29x2.4 for $54, free ship. They don’t have Kryp fronts but have most other Conti options and are about the cheapest around.

Came stock with an Dissector, which is probably burlier than what you are looking for.

i've run dual ground controls for what almost 1300 mi now (new ones arrived today).
fast rolling, light enough, durable enough, grippy enough. zero issues if i keep the sealant right.
i ride western CO and UT too. a lot of smoother trails (fruita, sky mtn, prince creek, etc), some rock gardens (gvt, monarch crest, etc) and a lot of things like wriad and sylvan lake loops.
i find it too easy to overthink: terrain. rider weight. trail conditions. tire pressure. tread pattern. wear life. rim width. mud clearing. gosh it goes on forever. i read this thread and my head spins.
so fwiw i just decided on new GC's and well, in my case they're .. good enough for who they're for. and 48/tire + free shipping in 4 days .. that works. ymmv.

    good luck in the race!

took this advice. Front dissector is in good enough shape and it will save a little money just getting one tire (just a little since maxxis tires are so expensive to the rest of the market). will report back after I win the race lol

I was running Conti Race Kings for awhile this year, they were working well until Snowbird, which killed the fucking things. Lots of punctures and drama. They were doing well in mellower stuff though (Corner, Flying Dog, etc) But the Bird is probably the text book proving ground for tire durability. I just put a Mezcal on the back and Conti Cross King on the front tonight, I will see how it goes. I have a Race King in ok condition you can have if you want to try it out (I wouldn't race on it, but it would be fine for an few after work ride). I found the trade off with low profile knobs is they're predictable in the sense that they will break free when you need them to, so if you get on the rear brake for a micro second and you can adjust your line and go on your way.

I had racing ray/ralphs on my hei hei last spring and then most of this year in 2.35 super ground. Weigh 770g or so, which is on the heavy side for an XC tire. Reasonably durable and have decent grip (I had one small puncture that sealed). I like that they're now f/r specific and have a harder rubber on the rear tire so you get a little better life out of a set. Downside is they're expensive so it's hard to recommend them over mezcals which are like $20 cheaper a tire. Both I'd say are xc tires you can actually ride around on trails and generally enjoy yourself.

The other day I went on the thurs group ride on the hardtail with thunder burts and was really wondering wtf I was doing.

Hei hei just got some syerras to replace the schwalbes. Plus a new vittoria "light" insert since my tubolight was shredded after two years.

New Season, New Tires, New Thread

Drank the kool-aid and got Kryptotal Fr and R, dh super soft. On my ls wrecker. Replaced DHF/DHR exo.

Really digging them. Corner nice, tons of grip. Riding faster and cornering harder than ever, though some of that is the bike too.

Running a bit lower pressure (mid-20) and that’s been great… and then I cracked a loophole, last run of the day so whatever… kinda ruined that run though. We’ll see how Evil’s warranty response is. I guess I’ll focus on my house projects in the meantime.
    focus.
