Oh. Haha. We've both had some bad, self-inflicted car luck for sure. At least with my C30, I'm happy with the results and enjoy the heck out of the car so still worth it for a rare car, even if I WAY overpaid for it. Made up for it with my crazy cheap S60 which thankfully turned out amazing.

Poor Gravity is just another victim of a completely shit used car market these days.

You would be correct, sir. Lots of "sweat equity" in there for sure. Somebody's gonna end up with a very well sorted out car for a great price though. Should be a win-win. I've ended up really liking it a lot but we really want a newer wagon and want to downsize the fleet. Will be selling both the S60 and the XC70 after I successfully get the replacement.

At least he doesn't have a TV show that somehow NEVER factor in their time when they show the "profit" flipping a car.

Seriously. If I've learned one thing from all my misadventures, it's that the car flipping business is NOT for me. At least with how I did mine, I got to take my sweet time repairing it and enjoyed the car (and it's A/C) for a while. And unlike the typical flipper, I didn't take any shortcuts with the refurb on it all.

From a respected mechanic who was pretty confident in it.

Man that guy pisses me off but at least the last two seasons he put the labor hours in the tab at the end. He still badly undervalues the work though.

Don't let em get you down GL, if it's any consolation the new LR's are apparently a massive money pit as well.

I think I've posted about it here and there, but my BiL ordered the new Defender a couple years ago now and it's been a headache ever since.

Heated windshield cracked itself while in use and then a replacement couldn't be found for almost a year.

Infotainment gremlins that I'm still aren't sure that are worked out.

Incredibly small interior for a very large exterior.

Rock broke the protective shield on the driver's side headlight which then let water in which then shorted out the entire damned car every time it ran without warning. It cost $4,500 to replace the headlight assembly too. When he found out the cost the JLR dealer told him to make an insurance claim for it. Ok, higher rates in exchange for not having to pay for an absurdly priced headlight?

To put this in perspective, I once owned a '78 Ford Fairmont with a cracked block (happened at about 40,000 miles) and it was still better than those 2 Grand Caravans.

Can confirm on infotainment gremlins. It loves to randomly forget my phone/disconnect CarPlay.

Interior is hardly small, but it’s not all useful space. Basically, it feels spacious- good shoulder room, head room, not very cockpit like in the interior, just not much more storage gained for all that. I feel practically claustrophobic getting into some other SUVs.

Fingers crossed on the windshield, as I just caught my first visible chip.

Oh don’t get me wrong. I find it completely fine inside, in fact I feel like it’s the “airiest” cabin of any SUV with lots of light. My BiL on the other hand has 2 kids under 4 and 2 Samoyeds so a Tahoe might have been better space for him, but hey, you pick what you like and I think it’s a handsome truck.

Yeah, the way my wife packs every trip to survive the apocalypse we maxed out with two kids and a 20lb dog.

Bobby's used car lot and Free Carfax

    Car decisions, chapter 249:

My 16yo has an ‘08 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT, manual. 145k. Not my first choice of a car for him, but it was a gift from family. He’s pretty cautious as a driver but it’s still too fast for a 16yo. It also needs some $$$ and I worry about keeping it on the road. It’s also not super practical for his hobbies - he likes to MTB and ski and fish.

My DD is a ‘13 allroad with 155k. I have the itch to upgrade, but have her in a good spot at the moment I think. With no other considerations, I’d trade it in and buy new next spring/summer. Probably an A6 allroad.

Thinking of selling the eclipse, picking up a gx470 or similar. Something that’s bulletproof but still road trippable. He can drive it until he gets something else and then I can petition the GOTOS thread for local and internet fame.

Also thinking about swapping cars with him, selling the eclipse, and putting that toward my new whip sooner than later.

Or I just push…. Keep the eclipse on the road through the winter, and probably swap him the allroad then. If I do that I’m in for a set of snow tires for the eclipse.

    WWMD?
    focus.

What does the Mitsubishi need ? Make it good enough, buy the kid a ski/bike rack, snow tires and start going to church. It's probably much cheaper to fix that thing than the Audi AND it probably isn't worth shit. You can't give Mitsubishis away. Bird in the hand and such......

Brakes. Steering and suspension bits. Which I’m doing anyways. After which I’ll have spent more on this car in a couple months than I’ve spent on the allroad in two years. Granted a lot of these issues were preexisting.

If we keep it, maybe a muffler. Tires for sure. Might need wheels.

And just started tracking a possible oil consumption issue.

The Audi hasn’t been bad, and after a brief journey in the desert I have an Indy shop who knows what they’re doing and doesn’t overcharge.

August 15th, 2023, that's the day the BMW design team lost all control. The day the grille and multiple stacked headlights became self-aware.
