That's what we're in the midst of currently. Eldest went fall '19, middle went fall '20, youngest is headed this fall. Fortunately, the eldest graduated in 3-1/2 to give me a short reprieve. Looks like the middle kid is on track to finish next spring. It definitely is going to be a time for celebration when they're all through.

I must say, though - getting rid of the mortgage has reduced my $$ anxiety quite a bit.

    University choice

Just dropped the kid off Sat & now touring a little on the way back home. He seemed pretty happy & excited to be on his own. Yesterday I hiked above 9k ft for the first time to about 10850. Rode a horse today for the first time. I may be a little sore tomorrow…

Be sure to hug your kiddos whenever you get a chance. Freshman died at dorm room at UC Berkeley. Too young.

Just spent the weekend with our college freshman. A close friend of his has known the deceased since middle school. Another close friend lives on his floor in the dorms. Son shared the whispered rumor in the Berkeley dorms. The whole thing sucks.

So kid #3 is in a fancy high rise with"secured" bike storage. He had his bike stolen that had been locked. When he asked the front desk about it he's informed that they had had a bunch of bikes stolen during Thanksgiving break. Granted he hadn't checked on it for a few months but it fucking rains all winter in Eugene so it collects dust for a few months. When I contact the property management to ask about their lack of information flow when they discovered the thefts all I get from these mf'ers is accusations of , " many of bikes are unlocked and it's not their responsibility to secure the bike area. The person I initially talked to responded if I was a business owner I would understand her snarky response. The second person I t spoke to told me he was going above and beyond just talking to me since I wasn't the guarantor in the lease, my wife signed the lease. All while telling me they don't guarantee security of the bikes or cars. I wasn't asking for anything other than when an issue has been discovered, ie known bike thefts maybe a cursory email to the tenants might be a prudent response. This mother fucker says something along the lines of it's a Eugene problem, nit the managements problem in the most condescending time imaginable.
Keep in mind when my kid first moved in the management took 2 months to replace the light in his room..
This is the same type of bullshit I got when I tried to get the deposit returned for kid #1 at his apartment a few years ago.
WTF is up with these third rate customer service property management folks in college towns ?
I'm a slumlord myself and my renters get treated better than my own wife.
IF you have a kid in Eugene, Oregon don't give "the Rive" your money. Fuck those guys and their shitty customer service.

Yep, when we moved out of our party house in college the landlord sued us for $20k. We had trashed the place and figured our deposit was gone, but the $20k was a surprise. So we fought it in court, went back to the house 4months later, snapped pics of all the things that were claimed to be fixed in their lawsuit, but we're not and then presented it to the court. The court didn't take kindly to being blatantly lied to, dismissed the lawsuit and made the mgmt company pay our legal fees.

College town landlords have a captive audience with incredibly low standards navigating the real world for the first time. All sorts of ways for shitty people to take advantage.

It was a cheap used bike and I didn't get renters insurance, it probably wouldn't even meet the deductible .It was the fact they offered a secured storage area but when something happens they will not accept any responsibility or even send out a courtesy email. They made a point of emphasizing the secured bike storage during the tour as well as cc cameras in site. The fucker on the phone wanted the name of the front desk employee that mentioned the theft. As in they don't want any acknowledgement by an employee. The responses and tone BOTH the employees took warranted a throat punch. If I ever spoke to a customer the way those fuckers spoke to me in my 30 plus years career I would have been fired on the spot.
IF I had renters insurance 2it would be 60 days after the fact and the "security cameras" they market would be of no value.
It's not about the monetary loss but the horrific customer service and total refusal to accept any portion of the missteps or evaluate flaws in their system.

Maybe don't abandon your bike on a rack for a few months and learn to change a light bulb is a good life lesson?

The parent's homeowner insurance might...seriously. Kids being in college is a weird in between space where sometimes their stuff in dorms or apartments can be covered by home insurance. Might be worth looking into, though if the kids bike is not worth much I wouldn't bother making a claim....implications to your own coverage could cost a whole lot more.

As for bikes in "secure" storage, that is the last thing I would ever count on no matter what claims are made regarding security, cameras, or anything else. If the bike is worth keeping, keep it in your room.

I see you have diversified your counseling from marriage to college life as well. Good for you.

Man, any bike at school, even the beaters, has got to be considered a temporary possession even in the best circumstances.

If this was one of those private dorm corporations, it seems their only focus is to separate parents from a lot of money, so their ambivalence seems natural.

Sucks. Good customer service or not, no property manager or landlord is taking responsivity for that bike. They marketed secure storage, not guarantee it.

Me thinks perhaps your attitude did you no favors? What was the end game you where looking for? Do you call you college age kid in sick for work also?

Reminds me a bit of when my Dad backed over my bike when I was about 6 because I left it behind his car. Accountability can be a bitch but its the only way.

Really, Foggy? I suppose your Dad had no culpability to responsibly operate a thousand pound steel vehicle? Good thing you weren’t on the bike at the time, you’d really have learned a good lesson…

Pretty easy to do more damage than a deposit will cover, but fuck your landlord for charging for work they didn't do

I think like ski areas do with deaths, a lot of colleges try to sweep this stuff under the rug as quickly as possible. An admin was telling me college suicides, and to a lesser extent accidental drug od's, are up significantly post pandemic.

How old is the kid at the high end apartment? What did Dad think the end game would be? Every actually give someone a throat punch? Do you always walk around your vehicle everytime you drive it to make sure their isn't a kids bike under the rear bumper?

Read what you wrote and think about how it might be interpreted. I'm not judging, I'm just responding to the post. Why did you even call?

surely you can imagine a scenario where the dad wasn't responsible even if legally, the driver is always responsible. Car parked in driveway, bike laid down behind the car and not visible, dad comes out of the house, gets in the car, and backs up. Do you walk around your entire car every time before you drive away?
