JG was not a pedal steel guitar player and would be the first to say so. It was his fourth instrument. He bought his first PSG in April 1969, and played it intermittently until 1974. He was self-taught, no lessons, no books, and made up his own tunings.
The video is from 1987, 13 years after he put the pedal steel down, and 1 year after a diabetic coma caused him to lose the ability to play guitar. He had to relearn it all.
*Source: http://deadsources.blogspot.com/2014...interview.htmlWhat I’m doing with the steel is I’m going after a sound I hear in my head that the steel has come the closest to. But I have no technique on the steel. I’ve got a little right hand technique from playing the banjo, and I’ve listened to records; but my intonation with the bar is still really screwed up. I have to do it by ear.
