JG was not a pedal steel guitar player and would be the first to say so. It was his fourth instrument. He bought his first PSG in April 1969, and played it intermittently until 1974. He was self-taught, no lessons, no books, and made up his own tunings.

The video is from 1987, 13 years after he put the pedal steel down, and 1 year after a diabetic coma caused him to lose the ability to play guitar. He had to relearn it all.

What I’m doing with the steel is I’m going after a sound I hear in my head that the steel has come the closest to. But I have no technique on the steel. I’ve got a little right hand technique from playing the banjo, and I’ve listened to records; but my intonation with the bar is still really screwed up. I have to do it by ear.

Young has said that he doesn't recall what the song is about. Dolly Parton, recalling a conversation while in the process of recording a cover of the song, along with Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt, for their 1999 album Trio II, said:

I loved the song on Neil Young's [1970] album and I loved it when Prelude had it out in 1974. But I didn't know what the song meant. Linda and Emmy knew Neil, so we called him and asked him. He said, 'I have no idea.' I thought that was so funny. I think it's about the Second Coming or the invasion of aliens, or both.[3]

However, in his 2012 biography Young reportedly gave a different explanation of the song's origin and meaning, describing the inspiration provided by a screenplay of the same name (never produced), which apocalyptically described the last days of California in a catastrophic flood. The screenplay and song's title referred to what happened in California, a place that took shape due to the Gold Rush. Young eventually concluded that:

After The Gold Rush is an environmental song... I recognize in it now this thread that goes through a lotta my songs that’s this time-travel thing... When I look out the window, the first thing that comes to my mind is the way this place looked a hundred years ago.[4]

"After the Gold Rush" consists of three verses which move forward in time from the past (a medieval celebration), to the present (the singer lying in a burned out basement), and, finally, to the end of humanity's time on Earth (the ascension process in which the "chosen ones" are evacuated from Earth in silver spaceships). On the original recording, in addition to Young's vocals, two instruments are utilized: a piano and a French horn. In the decades since the song was first released, the horn solo in the song has typically been replaced by a harmonica solo by Young in live performances.[5]

The line "Look at Mother Nature on the run / In the 1970s" has been amended by Young in concert over the decades and is currently sung as "Look at Mother Nature on the run / in the 21st century."[6][7][8]

1969 is the year Teach Your Children came out. which makes the solo even more amazing. Of course an ear for melody translates to any instrument but you still have to make the instrument do it--in the case of the PS with both hands, both feet and both knees. 4th instrument, no lessons,--he was still a damn good player.

One show I really enjoyed was the Blue Notes. He did a set first, and then they wailed on all sorts of Blues numbers until quite late.

Saw CSN&Y a couple times in LA @ the Greek and the Forum, but my best “I saw him…” was at Santa Monica Civic ‘70 touring for EKTIN.


Oh, and a couple years later he sat a couple rows in front of me at a Joni Mitchell/Jackson Browne concert at Carnegie Hall. Kind of cool.

Dang- like others, I thought he had passed. We are lucky to still have him around, considering his health history not to mention neurological. Saw CSNY at Red Rocks, a monumental show for me as I've always wanted to see the group all together. Saw NY solo at Broomfield and he rocked. Love him. Wish I was a little bit older to have been able to seen more shows BITD.

Someone mentioned his voice like nails on a chalkboard, well maybe that's why I can sing to his lyrics, lol. It doesn't work for some people, I get it. Like Stevie Nicks or Joni Mitchell never worked for me...to each their own. Not a Donna fan, either.
