    I laughed pretty hard.
Guy cut his losses and started to talk about skiing in Connecticut.

Stowe……figured the top conversation this year would be what everyone thought about the 30.00 parking.

I’ve only talked to one guy about it. I was saying how ridiculous the $450 pass was and how I would never pay that. He then told me he bought the parking pass.

    Guess I’m a gaper too.

In the ski area parking lot. Woman points at my roof box.

"What do you put in there?"

Same woman, pointing at various open clamshell ski racks. On a sunny, warm day.

"Oh, they must leave them open so they don't ice up."

That happened to me as a kid. My boot exploded while skiing. The boot sole stayed in the binding so the brake stayed up and the ski shot downhill. I was standing there with just the boot top and my sock in the snow.
I was with my friends family on vacation. The dad took my busted boot parts into the shop for repair. That must have been a good after work story for the folks working there!
    I got some rental boots

This isn't really a gaper quote, more of an odd sighting. This past weekend a guy was riding the magic carpet with his daughter. She fell after about two feet and her ski popped off to the side and somehow disappeared into a foot or so of fresh snow. I helped him dig around and we couldn't find the ski - like it fell into some icy crevasse next to the carpet or something. That was a first.

I rode the lift with 3 snowboarders yesterday who were lamenting that if they could do it all over again they'd learn to ski instead.

I can relate to some extent. Grew up skiing but picked up wakeboarding, then surfing when I was a teenager. Snowboarding just went hand in hand. Never really looked back at skiing until I started splitboarding around 10 years ago. I love sliding sideways but it’s such a pita trying to keep up with skiers in transitions. Part of me wants to go back to skis but my knees are fucked and it’d take a long time to catch up to my downhill abilities snowboarding after not skiing for 20 years. Then there’s the whole gear investment thing when I already have a closet full of splitboarding gear and a family to think about. I still haven’t made the leap but it comes up in convo with skiing buddies a few times every season.

Snowboarding was a much more practical alternative to skiing before someone figured out that skis didn't have to be 52 mm wide.

On the Collins lift today: "I wish that Alta would have more groomed slopes. There is fresh snow everywhere. There are too many moguls, even on the groomed slopes."
Me: "Even the groomers at Deer Valley have chop today."

^ I heard "It's getting tracked up" mid-day on a pow day over new years weekend. Not wrong but 90% of the hill was tracked up by 0930.

I remember a lady in an on mountain lodge at Vail bitching about the lack of grooming to a Vail employee (who I guarantee had very little pull with the grooming department) on a very large 2' powder day. It was the 90's, she was wearing a black Bogner or Descente fart bag with big furry hood. She looked exactly like Cruella de Vil. It is burned in my memory as a very "Vail" moment.
