We need to reconvene the TGR Cable Cutting Investigation Team.

So, is our little town under attack from domestic terrorists, someone just not appreciate His Majesty's Royal Mounted, or laser squirrels?

I fall into the Russian "special vehicle operations" camp.

In all seriousness - this could have been really bad for a lot of folks and was bad for some of the guests and business owners who lost their vehicles/tools.

These 8 vehicles are a rounding error in the supply agreement. Greater cost is the time to replace, when those emergency services are down waiting for repair or replacement.

I am not so sure the "cost to tax payers" is even a blip in the grand scheme of this disagreement between the pro-and anti pipeline folks.

The RCMP have been stationed here (at that hotel) and in Houston for a couple years now- driving out to the camp every day as far as I know. Plus extra costs when there is a flare up of tensions (pun fully intended).

It is the cost of having a democracy in which people are allowed to dissent and protest while others are allowed to rely on the permits and permissions they have been promised and go about their business.

It's caused me numerous heart attacks when a cruiser spins past on shift change as I was speeding (not that I do that sort of thing) the other way - but they don't seem to be that interested in anything but their role vis-à-vis the protests.

I do feel for the guys possibly missing a pay cheque today as their truck and tools are behind police tape. Not to mention those dealing with insurance claims, trying to replace tools and inventory and pissed clients etc. This hotel is where many of the guys working in the area, providing services and generally trying to make a living stay. It's right off the highway, has a massive parking area, and is reasonably priced and reasonably clean.

    2 words or one hyphenated

eco-terrorism and there is a whole lot more back ground than some vehicals getting torched possibly going back all the way to 1763 then Delgamuukw , Tsilqhot'in, the rail blockades a few years ago, dismantling of the Unistholten camps up in the Morice

the po-po used to sortie out of a camp in Houston so it will be interesting to see how this will change things

Last time I stayed at the Sunshine I parked in between two RCMP vehicles - in my mind I was hoping that might deter thieves from breaking into my vehicle. Didn't realize that getting torched was a risk.

    Nope not lost at all.

Smithers is in the southern half of BC. It may squeak over the line into the western half of BC but by inches if so.

Shit even Vancouver is in the eastern half of BC (despite being on the west coast of Canada)

    Maybe you're lost

Sorry to insult the location of your town in the padded room.

Who knew we could could have an "upstate BC" thread with the same level of vitriol?

re the flags, these people who fly the leaf upside down really piss me off. they don’t know how good they have it and the top ten reasons they hate trudeau are all pizzagate level stupid anyway. people have gotten really into flags lately though. for every upside down canadian flag there are probably 5 ukes and 2 palestinian. i don’t count the quebec flags, i just turn around and walk away. however, every once in awhile there’s an upside down fleur des lis with a right side up canadian.

people sure have a lot of opinions.

I googled where 54.78 is in Smithers, and it's the shoppers drug mart! The only thing more Canadian than a Timmys.

Give us BC guys a break. We just transitioned our Premier from an Irish working stiff turned NGO, to a west Van human rights lawyer. We are understandably somewhat conflicted. And yes, a bit touchy.

That would be awesome! (For us, can’t speak for Lee).

Unfortunately, Mr Eby does not appear to be so gifted in the tRG arts as Mr Lau.

We shall see, but BC politics has a history….

    Thank you for this.

The Canadian Tire here in Smithers was flying the flag upside down btw. My wife emailed someone up the Canadian Tire food chain and it got changed right away.
