I’m glad I don’t have to worry about tree wells over this way. Usually not enough snow and the trees aren’t really conducive to tree wells when the snow is really deep. I ski alone a lot unless I’m with sweetbippy or run into friends.

Lines on the quads were long but manageable. No lines on Kher's, 7th, or Tye. Tye was great fun yesterday afternoon bopping around all the barely covered boulders. Just had to be careful with the many holes lurking. Parking was fine too but I got there early since my family is now in the cult of SPAC.

Lines weren’t bad on Saturday. Hogs and Skyline were maybe 10-minutes. Big Chief was about 1-2-minutes and that is where all the good lines were. Other than parking, it didn’t feel like a weekend.

Yeah…not bad in my book. And the backside isn’t even open yet. I do remember that pre-COVID, the pre-Christmas days were pretty chill. Once Christmas break would hit, then people seemed to feel that ski season had officially started. Definitely an unexpected pattern so far.

Boarder caught right side up in a tree well off Red Chair in lower Grotto at Bachelor on Saturday. Buried up to his chest. Snow must of just collapsed under him. I guess if you're going to fall into a tree well best to do it in sight of the lift and go in feet first.

ETA: He self rescued. Just had to do some digging with his hands.

Everyone's been saying Crystal has been surprisingly empty, so looks like Stevens is the new place to be. Stevens parking completely full without the backside being open doesn't sound particularly appealing to me. Also wasn't Vail talking about adding parking at Yodelin?

I know several people in the Wenatchee Valley that were Mission regulars and they bought Stevens Epic passes because they’re cheaper than Mission’s. Good luck standing in line.

If lines approach 10 minutes at Mission, I pull the plug and drive home. It’s only 20 minutes. Fortunately I don’t ski weekends

10 minutes on hogs and skyline. Big Chief was 1-2 minutes. Sounds like a Big Chief lapping day! Lapping Double Diamond or Seventh always used to be pretty fun. Even lapping Tye Mill. I do miss those times a little bit. They used to have to put fences up at the bottom of Tye Mill because to get on the chair you had to go up a ramp. So the fences were there to slow you down. There was a ramp to get on Brooks as well but it was shorter. 90 degrees to the slope though. Loading seventh used to be a little different as well but you could still lap it if you skied pretty much under the chair.

Bottom of Seventh used to be higher than the top of Skyline. Of course we used to call it Barrier instead of skyline.

Hi PNW Mags. I’m visiting Seattle for work this week and taking the day off Thursday to ski Crystal. Would have been fun to make opening day at Alpental but looks like I will miss that by one day. Still, it will be fun to try a new mountain as I’ve not skied Crystal before (last time in the PNW was like 2010).

PM me if you’re interested in having a tagalong for some laps this Thursday. I am looking forward to exploring Crystal.

You will likely enjoy Crystal much more. The view from the top of Crystal on a sunny day is pretty unrivaled outside of some places in Europe.

Alpental will likely be a weird mix of cutup snow with a funky crust over the top of unconsolidated pow with plenty of open creeks, holes, and boulders around. I'm hoping to be there for a half day shift on friday, but expecting sun and character building conditions.

This is great advice. Go to Crystal and bring whatever skis you have for consolidated snow/groomers. Enjoy the stunning view.

$1,849 season passes is what is happening. I don't know anyone with a full Crystal season pass anymore. Everyone switched to mid-week, last chair, or changed resorts. I was at White Pass on Sunday. Lift ticket is $75 ($80 on initial visit). Contrast that to $159 at Crystal, $189 for the following weekend.

Don't get too exited though. I am sure those MBA bean counters at Alterra have realized they turned the Puget Sound skiing faucet a bit too far away from Crystal and will reduce prices a smidge next year in an effort to re-attract the masses.

Let's hope it takes them a minute to figure it out. But it probably won't.

Unfortunately, the wind last week scoured the ridges.
