Maybe AWD is bad for all those reasons posted above but since I got my first car with AWD, I'm not going back. No doubt driving uphill on snow covered roads, it really helps. Our driveway is probably the steepest thing I drive regularly. Sucks to have to park at the bottom, and haul the families shit uphill, like 10 trips.

Momentum, planning ahead, and driving skill will compensate for 2WD in a lot of situations. Low speed stuff without room for momentum can be a bitch, though, and parking lots and driveways are actually two of my favorite places to have the option to drive all four wheels.

I've had Falken Wildpeak AT3W on my Ranger and while it was pretty good in snow and ice for AT tire, the thread life in summer wasn't great. Last winter I switched to Blizzaks and it's been way more comfortable and predictable. For the rest of the year I have a regular Nitto Terra Grappler G2 which gets better mileage and better thread wear.

    Serious question.

My wife puts maybe 10k miles a year on her lease and turns it in every 2-3 years for a new car.

What issues do you have using snow tires on a leased car? Just keep them for your next ride or sell if your new car has different wheel size

No issues, just curious how people handle it when they don’t lease similar vehicles with similar wheel sizes.

Trying to sell used tires sucks balls though.

unless you live somewhere people don't believe in snow tires or your tires are actulay quite facked its pretty easy

you have to believe there are people ( smarter than you ) who buy real snowtires cuz they don't want to die in a ditch like some cheese eating school boy and need to trade around

often your tire dealer where your bought them will give you a pretty good trade towards your new tires

back in the day i bought a set of 4barely t used snowtires on rims to fit my $-runer for a pretty good price

Wow. Canadia is an amazing place. So they give you trade in value on your used tires when you buy new?

In America we get charged a tire disposal fee.

    Amazing.

True story: an old acquaintance ran un underground shop out of his garage. He had a lift and a tire machine, so along with fixing cars, he'd install tires that customers had purchased online. So one night after hours he's down at the local tire chain adding tires to their scrap pile, and the cops show up. But here's the twist: they thought he was taking the tires. After explaining that even though they're basically garbage, it's still considered stealing, they actually helped him unload his trailer.

i'm not sure you're giving the DWS06+ (assuming that's what you're referring to here) enough credit. I run them on Subaru (5MT turbo, driving in boost a lot) and drive in snow a fair amount, including on a couple snow covered, icy hills just now. while i do have Nokian Hakka 8 for winter, these see action from May 1-Nov1 each year. They were on the car when i bought it and i picked up a new set in '20 when they wore out.

The DWS are predictable on snow and in my test just now, i stopped completely on a snowy/icy hill and was able to start from stop and proceed up the hill. Coming back down, i was able to jack up the brakes and the skid was straight and steerable. i came to a stop in a decent distance, but obviously nowhere near as quickly as with the nokians. In a transition from snow>pavement>snow, the tires held pretty nicely throughout.

While the DWS06+ seem to be best suited to dry roads in summer - they really do hold the dry canyon road nicely as i'm throwing it into/out of corners at high RPMs - they do a great job in all conditions and i never feel like i'm caught unprepared on a snow covered road. Just a real-life point of reference i thought i'd offer.

There are all kinds of used tires and/or rims on FB marketplace so its a really easy to sell or find used tires

tire stores will often have used take offs for whatever reason, maybe they have to replace both tires on an axle when one fails on warranty, or a near newtires on rims for a popular model are really easy to resell so the dealer will take them on trade when the customer buys a new vehical

I don't know if there are disposal fees on a used product its kind of a moot point to me if it get me out of a jam or saves assloads of money but you seem worried about paying tire disposal and use that as your reason not to buy snow tires

The tire disposal fee is the reason I don’t need snow tires huh?

    Guilty.

Put it in neutral? Isn’t that what leads to stock car flamin’?

I don't know do they run stock car races in the snow down there ?

but what happens or used to happen on very slippery snow before anti-lock brakes/ front wheel drive/ all wheel drive is the the engine keeps driving especaily if its not warm yet/ fast idle and when you hit the brakes the drive wheels are still driving, the way around it was to put the car in neutral to coast or brake

I was taught by my Dad growing up in AK, to put the vehicle in neutral and pump the brakes when trying to brake on icy roads. Anti-lock brakes were developed for people who were unable or incapable of fast brake pumping foot actions.

It probably would have helped if my Dad hadn't been so cheap on tires and not buying winter tires. But you do learn how to drive on AS's and realize that owning a dedicated winter tire for your vehicle when you are constantly driving on icy and hard compact snow is preferable for your winter driving anxiety to have a tire that actually is designed for such conditions.

Yup. Now my old ford truck with RABS (rear only ABS) was a different story. It worked okay if it was loaded down, otherwise you were just asking the ass end to come around lol.

I would rather just mash the pedal

but someone always claims they can out drive it & wants a switch to turn off anti lock and anti skid

my brother in law first showed me the pumping brake in neutral for slippery snow on a 65 dodge cornet which had none of the modern safety stuff except maybe seat belts
