Unless you buy some kind of insurance with them those companies, as a rule, don't cover shit. If the car get's damaged en route - which is super-common with these car carriers - then your insurance covers it (which they will).

All of these companies just outsource various legs of the trip with subcontracted truck owners. The industry is nortoriously lacking any kind of regulation and if you do some research there are a gazillion horror stories out there. I shipped my car when me and the wife moved out West - other than it being about a week late it came in looking fine but the dude where I picked it up told me that damages are common and that the day before a nice Lexus came in with a brand new sunroof (aka a hole in the roof).

Might as well deal with someone who can look out for you a little bit - I'd take helicrackjnky up on his offer.

I live in Denver and last year my company subleased our old building to a guy that transports cars just as you need. He seems to be a great guy and his business is growing. www.autotrans1.com

Just curious, do you work for SEAKR Engineering?

My car shipping was subcontracted out to DAS by Allied Moving, so I really don't know what was paid for, particularly since my employer picked up all the costs. All I know is that I was given time to check it over and make a claim. I didn't need to; it was in fine shape.

    Hey Bumpskier,

Got any ideas how to get a 52 Jeep Willys that is not currently running from Windham, VT to Connecticut?

Hmmm, that is a tough one. VT and CT are to close to use a car carrier like Dependable Auto Shippers (we use them at work). Do you have AAA? If you do, they can tow it a certain distance and then you pay a dollar amount per mile. My car once died in the long term parking at Logan Airport. I had AAA tow it all the way back to VT. The first 100 miles were free (that may vary on the type of membership you have) and then it was like $2/mile after that or something. It cost me about $60 I think. The AAA membership is pretty cheap too and you get like 10 tows a year.

Otherwise, you may have to rent/hire a flatbed truck to move it.

That isn't true. Most auto insurance companies will not cover your vehicle while it is being shipped by an auto carrier (I deal with this everyday M-F). For $199 get the carriers insurance..better safe then sorry. Or at least confirm 100% with your insurance carrier they will cover it!
Not all car shippers sub-contract out the work. DAS, is a huge company and has their own fleet of trucks and drivers.

The industry is kind of shady and has a bad rep. Car's get damaged often, and the shipments are notoriously late. It is kind of like the moving industry...horror stories run rampant.

That's kind of what I figured. No AAA, but it may be worth signing up for that reason alone.
Thanks for the quick response anyway. It was helpful & I appreciate it.

Only if it's changed in the past 2 years. I made sure I was covered by my auto policy and it seemed to be the standard at the time. In fact the company I used to ship my car didn't even offer insurance and said you HAD to use your auto policy. Perhaps insurers are wise to it now because of the prevalence of damages.

DAS sounds like one of the good ones.

Anybody heard from that Russian hot chick bot lately? I could use some updated information on car shipping options. Anybody got a particular car shipping company or broker that they can recommend? Anybody in particular I should avoid like the plague? What should I expect to pay to get a vehicle from Florida to upstates in this day and age?

I used Amerifreight in 2021 for $1300 to go MA to CA. They are just a broker company who finds you a place on a truck but it worked well for me. It helped with cost to have someone local on either end to drop it off or pick up at more conciseness location like a nearby interstate that full door to door service.

Check out uship. You input what you’re shipping and where and people will give you offers. I shipped a boat this way a few years ago and it worked well.

“ Auto drive away?”While I don’t mind paying people to do my work for me, I’ll be damned if I’m gonna pay somebody to have my fun for me.

I did a drive away car a couple of times back in the '80s. We got a car to drive from Philly to Berkeley, we did the drive in 3.5 days and had 7 total, so we took the car to the Dead shows at Laguna Seca before turning it in. Also before turning it in we secured a replacement drive away car, from the Bay Area to NJ, and drove back.

    It was awesome.

But I don't think I would ever "ship" my car that way, lol.
