Been pondering bout what I meant saying don't lump all athletes together.
Maybe the place to start is what constitutes a professional athlete.
In my mind, a professional athlete is sponsored such that their sport is their only job.
Ya don't get free goggles and get to call yourself a professional athlete.
Ya don't get to fundraise and such.
Brand ambassadors and athlete influencers are not professional athletes.
They are brand ambassadors and athlete influencers.
    Big difference in my mind.
And when brand ambassadors and professional athletes are lumped together?
    Social media at it's worst.
    At least for me...

Why all the Caroline Gleich hate?

I agree with not calling yourself a pro if you get floated free goggles. The rest of it though, is not so black and white anymore.

IMO, if a person makes a majority of their money doing a sport I think they are a pro.

Some of the best skiers I know are ski bums not pros because they either can’t, or don’t want to, market themselves enough to get the sponsorships they would need

So a ski patroller? What about a gear tester? Or gear designer who gets paid to use it later? How about a ski model? Or a stunt man?

Yeah, I don’t know. It’s not black and white like I said, but I think most of them could be considered that

I'm a 42 year full time ski patroller, and by definition, a professional skier...

Freeskiing is tough to judge because you make all your money from product endorsement. Contrast that to ski racing, where someone like Shiffrin can make well over $500k a year in just race winnings (excluding all her endorsement money; not to mention the USST pays for travel and lodging). And in ski racing, it is safe to say someone like Shiffrin is objectively the best female ski racer on earth when she wins the overall title. Where as the freeskiers in say, a TGR film or the FWT are damn good skiers. But can you say that they are objectively the best on Earth? As Supermoon points out, there may be skiers out there doing even ballsier, more creative adventures but not cashing in or promoting themselves. It's difficult to compare today's freeskiers (who increasingly must rely on instagram and youtube for money, which, lets face, is kind of annoying) and those in the past, who just had to sell skis and redbull.

Unfortunately the pay and benefits aren't good enough for that to be the reality for many professional athletes. Heck, Home Depot has done commercials showing how many professional athletes they give jobs to. In some sports the endorsement opportunities are pretty lean and they survive on stipends from their governing organization and part-time jobs.

Why all the Caroline Gleich hate?

What happens after these athletes have some screen time (TGR, etc)? Living the good life off their TGR money and 401k? Back to tending bar and ski bumming?

‘Professional’ is based on three items - competence, remuneration, and accountability. Most have some form of the first 2, but most can’t claim the third (and social media by itself isn’t accountability in a true sense IMO)
