This popped up on the feed tonight. Not mine so I can’t claim the veracity but at first blush it seems to check out.

All I know is I rocked each of these while manning the lawn mower as a kid for hours.

    90's appreciation thrad

Nevermind on its own should qualify.

Someone mentioned Volants and backseat landings and I had totally forgotten about that. Landing backseat on those fuckers was like landing on concrete - until you passed the stress point. Then they fucking folded. Permanently.

That may have been how mine died but I can’t remember. Too much Dock Street Amber. And Avery Red Point.

RHCP was really an 80s band because the BSSM album was the end of the good stuff. I saw them twice in '90 and they didn't get that far by not being active in the 80s.

Mother's Milk was '89 and their early stuff was well, rough. Californication was what, '99? One Hot Minute wasn't great, but BSSM and Californication were peak RHCP. By The Way was '02 and Stadium Arcadium was '06 and can't be ignored. So for an 80's band, they sure didn't do much in the 80's.

Except the stuff I like is their early stuff up through Mother's Milk. BSSM is when they jumped the shark, but still listenable, and Californication and beyond is awful.

Yes 90s RHCP is different than 80s RHCP. But to say Californication and such is “beyond awful” is questionable. You’re of course entitled to that opinion…but you’re also wrong.

I didn't say it was beyond awful. I said Californication and beyond was awful. Too very different things. I'm not wrong, everyone else is wrong.

Know who else is overrated? 311, Sublime, No Doubt, and my least favorite....Weezer

RHCP is like Aerosmith. Popular stadium band generic sing-along stuff that was better when they were strung out on heroin.

So you’re saying they were great all the way into the 2000s at least

All those in the first group were high school 90s favorites. And yeah, over time you stop listening to them until 25 years later you hear them on the “classic alternative” station and a few of their songs make it back onto your Spotify playlist.

Personally I don’t put RHCP in that group. I may not be their biggest fan but I also didn’t drop them when I left for college either.

You take this padded room thread pretty seriously I see!

There was hard drug use in that band until around 2008 (but yeah not heroin). Kiedis has been sober off heroin since the end of 2000.

We can argue about when they went from a great band to not a great band - that is subjective (I think they’re still great).

I haven't found much past 1994 or 95 that I truly appreciate.. Tribe, Dre, End of the hair metal era, ska, etc..I do dig all that shit. Now Linkin Fucking Park.. I did that shit but a little surreal now that we know he was fucking serious about being that depressed. That's getting in to the early 00s though..
