My 20 y/o wagon has gotten a series of dings the last few years. I live with them. The 14 y/o sedan got a shopping cart ding and I fixed it. $175 PDR. That car is perfect cosmetically.

I don’t know about making claims for small repair. What’s your deductible?

This "should I get my dents fixed" question is a very Dexter-like question for which a myriad of answers are possible.

I sense way less vitriol in this discussion though.

Is pho considered soup? I had a nice bowl of it yesterday and am now craving more.

He hasn't responded yet, but what has me suspicious is the question is posed in a very Dexter-like manner. If oldnewguy is actually a Dexter alias, we'll find out when he responds and starts a fight with with everyone offering up an answer.

    Hmmm, I hadn't considered that.

Didn't Dex flame out in spectacular Polyass fashion in the early days of the Ukraine thread?

I haven't really seen him since. Maybe he's gone back to Polyass, maybe he's enjoying the ECRC storm cycle, who knows?

On the rear ender incident we did happen to pull into the parking lot of a Ramen place to exchange info.

Life is busy, not having a car or dealing with a loaner is annoying so if the ROI on the repair is small and the reported accident causes my insurance to go up or value to go down it seems like a wash.

How do you avoid the CARFAX report?

See? It all comes back to soup in the end.

Handling outside of insurance all together with the other party, using a shop that does not report to Carfax, using your own insurance and having the other party reimburse you for your out of pocket costs are all ways I've seen people avoid the carfax ding.

Buying a 10+ year old car what could go wrong?

i’m gettin’ learned today! you saved me a bunch of time, thanks for the keystrokes and rundown on specifics. wife drives an 09 rattle can and i think is set on newer year which seems to jive with info here. ‘14+ seems to be the winner or a bit earlier if there’s room for a tune up/suspension in price (want to do stage 1) i’ll report back, hopefully as a wagon owner again.

This. Picked up a 1 owner 2014 in 2020 in your old neck of the woods. We’ve put ~30k very enjoyable miles on it since purchase.

Look for records of regular oil changes. There have been horror stories of people running long oil change intervals that have resulted in $$$ timing chain fixes.

Clean as a Safeway chicken there Dub. I put 227,000 on my 3rd gen Limited from new and it could have easily done another hundo when I traded it in. Enjoy.

A couple hours in the driveway can make a huge difference in how a used car looks.
First i got the car washed. Then I clay barred. Then hit all deeper scratches with cutting compound. The hit the whole body with polishing compound on a dual action polisher. Then some wax and a final wipe. Ooh yeah. So shiny!
Car is nice. The more I drive it, the more I like it.

Hard to beat Mercedes’ paint quality. I use Menzerna 2500 with excellent results. Have to go slow.

What color ambient light you using?

I don’t understand anything you said. Is your local drive through car wash closed on weekends?

Heh, i started with a drive through car wash. That was the first step.
But the previous owner had a subscription to a drive through car wash chain, and that is sort of the root of the problem. All the dirt that was removed from the car in front of you, and the one before that is in the scrubbers that then cleans your car, and while it does remove dirt, it scratches your paint like crazy. Repeat 20 times, now your car's finish is dull and lacks that shine a new car has. Add to that 8 years of scratches. So, if you want to fix up your paint on an 8 year old car with 80k you gotta do some work. Is it worth it? To me, yes.

I like amber color. Minimum brightness. I also run my dash cluster at minimum brightness and set my star button to toggle the screen on and off, so i can turn it off quickly. I don't want to see lots of lights in the car when I drive at night.
