Peter Bogdanovich - R.I.P.

For whatever reason, the films and influence of Peter Bogdanovich always flew under my radar.
I saw The Last Picture Show a long time ago, but have no recollection of it.
Last year I re-watched Paper Moon, which I had previously only seen in bits&pieces on late night TV. It was fantastic. Then I checked out Bogdanovich's oft maligned Nickelodeon, which had its moments.

I just learned that he passed away earlier this month (I was without internet from 12/24 - 1/20).

In tribute I watched What's Up Doc? the other night.
WOW!!!
What a great film.

That extended trailer is a treasure - nice find! What’s Up Doc is definitely a comedy classic! One things for sure - they’ll never drive another car down steps in San Francisco like they did in the movie! Different time, indeed.

Last Picture Show definitely deserves another watch every few years. Another classic, lots of great performances, and a sullen, nubile Cybill Shepherd. Good stuff!

I saw it. Thinking back. I think the star power in that movie was about sending a message about the whole lifestyle and the people involved

I watched What's Up Doc? 2x, the first regular, then with Bogdanovich's commentary. He mentions Bullit a number of times as an influence and partly why je chose SF as the locale.
Additionally, on the second viewing I saw all the damage they did to the staircase with that VW.
Also, Ms. Streisand did a lot of her stunts (at least the close-ups).
Bogdanovich also stated that What's Up Doc? was the first film to list stunt people's names in the credits.

Hmm, I’ve never thought of “What’s Up Doc?” as being a “great” movie. On the other hand, “Paper Moon” definitely qualifies. Well worth watching.

I don’t think I ever made it all the way through “The Last Picture Show” without falling asleep or changing the channel. Maybe I should attempt watching it again at some point.

Yeah, I "need" to read that (along with his other 12 books...).

I would say that on some levels PB was almost better known/revered as a film historian and critic.

I have his 2 documentaries queued up (He did one on John Ford, the other on Buster Keaton)

Directed By John Ford is a pretty paint-by-numbers doc.
Best thing about it are the archival interviews with John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda, and Ford himself.
And there is one interview segment with Steven Spielberg that is fantastic.
It drags on towards the end, but if you are a amateur cinephile it's worth a watch (I didn't realize how many of Ford's films I've seen ( and how many I haven't, as well!)).
