The Bears have no hope though.

    EWG is right.

Ouch. Just when I had poured a(nother)whiskey and thought I had hit rock bottom as a bears fan I have to hear from a browns fan about having no hope. That hurts man.

And just like that, the Nick Mullens era is over.

Browns release the 3rd best QB we've got.

They should just snap directly to Chubb.

I don’t think all of those picks were on Baker by any means.

Doesn’t make it suck any less.

That game was theirs to win. Give the ball to Chubb with 3 TOs, FFS

He's lucky he didn't have 6 INTs. Garbage game.

Baker is garbage, just my opinion. But yeah, when they got the ball back I texted my brother and told him they would screw it up with a pick or poor clock management.

Yeah, I hate to blame it on the refs with so many shit plays by Mayfield, but the first and last pick were definitely DPI. They also missed a clear face mask penalty early in the game. I can't believe how the Brownies were able to run for chunks for most of the game. Why stop at the end with 3 TOs left?

Can't believe how close they got to winning after how shitty they were playing.

Watching the TB vs Carolina game, I can confidently say Cam Newton would not an improvement at QB compared to Mayfield.

If you’re the Browns GM how do you handle Baker’s contract situation?

Ok, a preface: I think success and failure in the NFL has a lot to do with the situation and less to do with talent than many think. That said, I think Baker is super accurate, generally, and he is a solid quarterback. But confidence is so, so important. Up until this last game I was feeling good about re-signing him, happy to take the discount that a year of playing with injuries and lower stats would force him to take. Now I'm less sure. I felt good about the second half he played. Everyone misses a throw or two but that unlucky last one could leave a mark. I'm now a little worried about his head. I think Stefanski's offense makes QBs look a lot worse than they are, because it's not a QB driven scheme. Stefanski really wants to limit turnovers more than anything else (up until this week Baker had the third fewest INTs in the L among full time QBs.) SO I know he doesn't stand out stats-wise, but as long as his confidence is intact I'm ok with that.

Here's the rub - if you let him start next year without a contract, and it really was the injuries causing the issues, it might be really hard to sign him after he plays 8 or so very good games. He might rightfully start thinking about signing with a team that is more QB friendly - and I think many would take a chance on him if he's playing well. I also think Wentz showed that being "washed up" someplace is not necessarily true forever - he got traded and is playing well, so it's important to keep that in mind for this next part.

The Brown's have a good team and cap space and are set up for future success. I believe they were very, very unlucky this year but were a good team with issues to work through. Assuming no Deshawn Watson trade (and I can't imagine he'd accept a trade to Cleveland) I think I'd try to sign Baker this summer (assuming he doesn't implode the last two weeks of the season) for the cheapest price I can sign him for - something like $33-35 mil/year for 4 years. That's a tradable contract even if he doesn't do great - assuming he doesn't totally melt down (with his history of proving himself over and over again in college that's unlikely) and worst case, you could always draft a rookie under him year 2 or 3.

    My two cents.

Does Baker go for a shorter deal like that? Who knows. It’s going to be an interesting one to watch and will have major ramifications on the teams cap situation going forward.

The Browns absolutely did not play shitty last night. Look at the numbers. Chubb and Johnson went off on the ground. They had good receiving numbers and time of possession. The Defense balled out and kept the MVP to 22 points.

Baker just threw 4 picks is all.

That said I’m with EWG. I’m a Baker fan and you have to keep in mind the injuries the guy is playing with. Sign him now, at a discount. Roll with all the talent this team has next year and try again. So many unlucky breaks this year it’s impossible to get a read on where the issue is, if any.
I still call it The Jake.
