That was great today. I’m off to the planet Hoth for a month so will jump back in sometime in January. Bummed to be off zwift but duty calls.
Can someone remind me how long one of these rides lasts and the typical w/kg range assuming we're all fat-ass middle aged men?
15 mins per lap, so just around 45 mins.
Last night was:
First lap was <2.0 w/kg
Second lap bounced around at like 2.2w/kg
Third lap was a little quicker with 2.3-2.7 w/kg.
My attached photo was the last part of the 3rd lap, getting close to the final climb. My power graph is on the bottom, with the 2nd lap climb on the very left in red, and you can see the pace picked up and i was a bit more yellow and orange, and one red where i fell off the back while typing in the chat.
In that photo you can see that all of our power ranged from 3.2 (leading) to 1.9 (drafting) depending where we were in the pack.

I'm sure this has been covered, but what is the cheapest way for me to get in on this action? Buddy recommended the Garmin smart trainer, but anybody got a line on something cheaper? My bike budget is 0.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.
Option 1: Buy a used smart trainer and hook your current bike up to it. But they are hard to come by, and heavy, so shipping is not an option.
Option 2: Get a free "dumb trainer" from someone (everyone has one collecting dust) and then you only need a Bluetooth wheel speed and cadence sensor. This will allow you to ride in the program , and it will estimate your power based on your weight, height, age, wheel speed, cadence, and trainer setting. But you won't get the full experience of the Zwift program.
A smart trainer really gives you the advantages of the Zwift program. The smart terminology means it communicates with Zwift and adjusts the trainers difficulty as you climb and descend. It also allows you to do structured workouts where it adjusts the trainer's difficulty, or exact wattage for the prescribed output.
Good advice from Dee - get someone to give you their dumb trainer and go that way - while simultaneously saving up for the smart trainer you’re going to want
I was pretty disappointed with Zwift when I tried it pre smart trainer. Since I bought one, won’t say I love it but definitely use it much more. It’s far more engaging! These rides are definitely fun and knocking off routes in the winter pays dividends. Also find the tour de Zwift is another good event

Thanks. So, should I just suck it up and buy an inexpensive smart trainer? Any suggestions?

Sorry I had to miss tonight, I had to (gasp) work.
How was tonight, anyone have a snap shot of the riders for my spreadsheet.
Nice tight group of 4 tonight. Myself, Tom Anderson, Derek Hembree and Ezo Sapporo who rambled on and on about how Japan is gonna get a meter of snow in the next few days. Yeah ... whatever dude ... we get it ...
Fun stuff. Tom bailed after two laps. We rolled well. Couple of little flyers here and there but we regrouped and finished strong.

パウダーバカ!!
It was a fun ride, even though I spent a lot of the ride trying to keep the burger and beer I had for lunch down (what was I thinking....)
Oh, and I got Ride On envy watching Santori.....dude gets a Ride On every 15-30 seconds, made me feel like I was riding with a Zwift celebrity....
I meant to come out today. Also meant to go take a lap up snowbowl. Or do some xmas shopping or something. Last night's race up ventoux had me being pretty lazy all day. It's so far up there. Got pretty tedious. Plus side I picked a good pace and didn't blow up and put down decent power.
