Welp, exactly one week of in person learning at the girls high school, and I’ve received TWENTY SEVEN emails from the school about COVID positives amongst teachers and staff……Thing Two started showing symptoms yesterday, so off to her PCP and then a test……There is now way we make it through the year, especially with all the dumb fucks bleating their anti-mask/ anti-vax lunacy at the most recent board meeting…..We are fuct.

We know that the vaccine reduces the number of infections, transmission, and we also think that it reduces the total number of replications in breakthroughs.

None of those provide opportunity or selection pressure for increased virulence.

The figure cited is for Pfizer. In the study Moderna did better although there was drop off. The problem with assessing drop off is that if you just look at cases, hospitalizations and death you are comparing original covid to delta. Is the increase in cases due to drop off or due to more infectious strain? To tell you have to measure antibody levels, and that doesn't tell you about T cells. And a level of drop off that is tolerable with original Covid may be intolerable with delta. So do we start giving boosters or do we stop making first generation vaccines and start making anti-delta and give that as initial doses to the unvaccinated and boosters to everyone else?

A possible explanation on why breakthrough cases happen and why vaccines still offer protection from severe infection (rarer breakthrough hospitalizations tend to be older people with health issues):

Vaccines that are injected into arm muscles aren’t likely to be able to protect our nasal passages from marauding SARS-CoV-2 viruses for very long, even if they are doing a terrific job protecting lungs from the virus.

Vaccines that are injected into the arm have done a spectacular job at preventing severe disease and death. But they do not generate the kind of protection in the nasal passages that would be needed to block all infection. That’s called “sterilizing immunity.”

Back when the Covid vaccines first began widespread distribution most health experts were skeptical of full sterilizing immunity. The fact that intramuscular injection protects lungs, but not always the upper airways is representative of how other vaccines work.

There are a number of nasal vaccines in Phase I trials, and one each in Cuba and China in Phase II. None in Phase III anywhere. I don't know anything about the relative difficulty of making injectable vs oral or inhaled vaccines. With polio--Salk (injectable) made his vaccine in what people thought was record time--too quickly for some. Sabin (oral) followed several years later. I got both. And polio before that.

Having followed this thread, this is something I, a complete dummy, have been aware of. One would assume the CDC has been aware of it. So, why were they so quick to change their masking recommendations? Given the current state of things, it seems borderline incompetent.

The decision was made based on the facts on the ground at the time. They were quick on masking because that is a policy that can be changed and reversed instantly, unlike something like shutting down businesses and schools. In any case, it is highly unlikely that people who were diligently wearing masks before suddenly through them away when the CDC said they weren't needed. And of course there were a lot of people who weren't wearing them before. It is very likely that had the delta surge would have happened even if the CDC had not eliminated its mask recommendation for the vaccinated.
What bothers me is the number of people, including most journalists I heard or read, who couldn't cope with the idea of changing recommendation based on changing facts on the ground.

Could some vaccines drive the evolution of more virulent pathogens? Conventional wisdom is that natural selection will remove highly lethal pathogens if host death greatly reduces transmission. Vaccines that keep hosts alive but still allow transmission could thus allow very virulent strains to circulate in a population. Here we show experimentally that immunization of chickens against Marek's disease virus enhances the fitness of more virulent strains, making it possible for hyperpathogenic strains to transmit. Immunity elicited by direct vaccination or by maternal vaccination prolongs host survival but does not prevent infection, viral replication or transmission, thus extending the infectious periods of strains otherwise too lethal to persist. Our data show that anti-disease vaccines that do not prevent transmission can create conditions that promote the emergence of pathogen strains that cause more severe disease in unvaccinated hosts.

If vaccines inevitably caused super resistant strains to emerge we would all be getting polio, measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox, diphtheria etc etc. I don't know if there are any viruses in humans where that has happened. I think flu mutates spontaneously, not due to vaccine pressure. but I could be wrong about that. If the chicken virus in that study should leap to humans we should be careful though.

My wife had a severe respiratory illness--nearly fatal, turned out not to be Covid--in April 2020. Our house in Sacramento was filled with unmasked EMT/firefighters--6 or 7 I believe. I was shocked. I asked a firefighter/paramedic friend who worked for a different dept and he was shocked.
If my wife should get that sick again I will ask the EMT's if they've been vaccinated and if not I'll throw them out of the house.
