I live on a dead end. A new couple started walking down the street late at night with their dogs. Why? I have no idea. There's a ton of roads that don't pass in front of people's houses. Every single dog on the block starts barking. My kids wake up. Then I wake up.

I'd also like to add people who pick up their dog crap and then leave it in the bag right where they stand. I confronted a lady and she said she's coming back. I asked her does that mean the rest of us just have to look at your dog's waste because you can't carry it? I was in mammoth and some lady just left it to the side of the running trail like it was no big deal.

HA! I had over 30 emails in 2 different chains over the weekend because of this. Coworker spent the weekend frothing at the mouth over some non-issue. He was really mad nobody responded and chewed me up this morning cause I missed the 6:30AM call with the team in India.
He scheduled the thing in a separate email chain nobody was CCed on so even if I had checked last night I'd have missed it. The actual invite was sent around 3:30AM. He texted me at 6:20AM to "remind me" about it. Sigh...

Well--at least the dog shit in a colorful bag is less likely to be stepped on, and it will decompose eventually--assuming they use biodegradable dog poop bags and not bags from supermarket produce.
But given the number of obviously abandoned poop bags, poop bags thrown into green waste cans (which means the trash people won't empty that can), poop bags placed next to someone's bear box with the expectation that the owner will pick it up--all those people who claim they'll pick it up on the way back are either liars or kidding themselves.

I agree it's a big problem. Maybe there should be an app that pings you about forgetting shit bags but I'm not sure how that could be effective 100% of the time. I just don't think leaving poop on the trail that you actually pick up later is selfish, you guys don't seem to agree, fine. I don't blame anyone who honestly forgets.

There are too many dog poop bags for it to be a "oops I forgot this one time" thing. As for carrying it with you - yes, but be forewarned, the biodegradable bags are semi-permeable (give 'em a sniff if you're dubious). Best to have a washable secondary container - I like the silicon resealable snatchers.

Leave No Trace ethics are as much about other users experience as they are about conservation.

If purely conservation, LNT would suggest we all piss in the middle of the trail because that doesn't disturb the environment on either side. You know what it does disturb? My hike.

If your bag sits there for 2 hrs and is seen by a dozen people before you pick it up, that still sucks. I don't want to walk/hike/bike/run a trail with a bunch of plastic bags on the side, even if they are gone by nighttime.

So, some neighborhoods in Paris a few years ago got DNA samples from all of the resident dogs. If a poop got left, it was tested, and if a match could be found, the owner got a fine. I propose we do the same thing here, but instead of a fine, all of the Unidentified poops get deposited in the offender’s kitchen.
