I'd love a e39 540i 6 speed as a "practical" fun car but I think I missed the boat on those being affordable.

Kid in the neighborhood, looks to have just graduated high school, has been driving around in a very clean looking '98 540i in hunter green. Still has the Carmax temporary plates on it. I should ask him what they wanted for it.

97 M3 was exactly was an M car should be. NA straight 6, light, three pedals and very few (if any) driver aids. I'm not sure what those are going for now but I bet a nice one will go for close to the original MSRP.

My dad picked up a 98 540i wagon back then when a local dealer had one after a canceled order. I can't even find one of these used anymore but I bet they fetch a ton in the enthusiast used market. Grumbling V8, 155 mph top speed, beautiful E39 body style.....oh those were the days.

The M3 was such a fun car, one of my favorites. Being my first car, I was stupid and took that thing into the woods on multiple occasions. It really made me a good driver both on and off road hahah.

My pops had a 2001 740i M Sport or whatever, and that thing was so good too. We talk all the time about we should have never gotten rid of these older BMWs, and how we don't like the new ones.

You bring up a very good point. I have to believe though that Upstate Steve would be at a bar not unlike the one in Happy Hour Hero (where ever that is) and regular Steve would make the occasional visit as he passes through on the way to Asspen.

I'll fully admit that I had more balls than brains but loved to hoon when I was young. I kept my grades up really high (myself too if I'm honest) and got treated with a really nice second car once the need arose and my younger sister took over my Volvo 760turbo for being a 'good kid'. Enter a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 5.2L V8 and full time four wheel drive. I only wrecked it once, at slow speed too, but it's a miracle that thing didn't end up wrapped around a tree.

My first car too. Bought used with 80k miles for $3k back in like 1988. Recall for the engines that caught on fire netted me a free new engine install. Crashed that bitch into a tree on a snowy road about 1 yr after the new engine install. Fun little car if you ask me.

I grew up riding motorcycles and by that time, I was adamant about getting a serious crotch rocket. I was going to get one no matter what anyone said. As soon as I got the M3, I realized I could have similar fun on 4 wheels, and tabled that plan for another year or so. I like to think my father was actually very smart for doing this. I needed a year learning the rules of the road before

I feel like 240hp isn't that ridiculous when over 3000lbs, and the chassis was good for learning at the limit. A sporty Civic is about the same power:weight

I borrowed a late 80s Dodge Shadow turbo manual to go to a Rage Against The Machine concert. Had hideous 3 spoke wheels and a big spoiler. Best part was massive decal on back: Fuck Milk, Got Beer.
