Hey, there are reasons for them. I've had many good nights of sleep in an RTT. The pain in the ass factor outweighed owning one for me though. Just like my 90% haven't seen a moose comment, I bet 90% of the owners are not getting the benefit of them other than looking "overlandy". And this thread is for scoring overlandy points.

Well, duh, but for all the “micro sharing” and “fractional use” folderol apps nobody has bothered to come up with a reasonable and affordable solution for having the gear the 10% of the time you actually use it. The moose was in a NPS campground, not exactly rugged wilderness

There was that one time at a festival when a drunk guy walked into the side of our tent in the dark, so there's that. All the animals I've been around in hundreds of nights of tent camping seem to have known better than that though; and if you keep food out of the tent, mice won't bother either. I kind of get it for middle-of-nowhere dispersed camping, where you can't always find a flat tent spot on a dirt road in the dark.

Sorry about walking into your tent. At least I didn't start pissing on it. . Seriously though, tent ropes at a festival are teh death. I got cleaned out by one in the dark while I was tripping balls once.

Isn't that G.O.T.O.S. though? Own it 100% of the time. Use it much less. Everything is affordable with credit.

And music festivals are one of the best reasons to own a RTT. I loved it for that. But drunk dudes still run into the ladder. The last festival I used one at, I had to bribe a dude with gatorade to wake up and stop leaning on the ladder so we could get down. He was wearing pee pants.

Add bears and yeah, all those years camping on wildfires in AK. We are relatively fragile and little things. I’d have been glad for a RRT, but there weren't any roofs either.

I get the appeal of a RTT and not having to sleep on the ground like some kind of god-damn animal. But can’t I just slap a sheet of plywood on the roof and use the tent I already own and save a couple thousand $$?

I use a big canvas springbar tent, which is perfect for family use, but if I were single, a hard shell rooftop tent would be tempting for how quick it would be to set up and how you wouldn't need to find a spot without uneven rocks/something to hold stakes. That's assuming I was driving a vehicle that I couldn't just sleep inside for some reason. I don't really understand the appeal of the soft side rooftop tents that take a lot longer to put up.

Most of you old creaky ‘back in my day’ fossils could probably benefit from the comfort of a nice rooftop tent ironically. At least Otzi is honest.

What amazes me about owning a RTT though is the huge daily gas mileage drop commuting around with it. I presume they are a pain to get on/off your rack and it’s hard to store, so that’s why they stay on for most of the year. And on top of that you are barely using them..i don’t get it for most people.

I don't understand the logic of the RTT justifiers who say it's better than trying to pitch a tent on uneven ground. If the ground is uneven, then so is your vehicle.

I've never found it that difficult to locate flat enough ground to pitch a tent when camping - put your feet at the downhill end if it's sloping.

It's harder to get my truck leveled out with a pop-up camper in the bed. I have bubble levels on the dash and B pillar to make it as easy as possible... sometimes still means placing rocks under tires or using the leveling blocks.

multiple tools gotta mean a higher score in my book. the layperson on the road will not recognize the multifunction of the billet MPORRT (multi purpose off road recovery tool) and may therefore think you are not properly equipped.

We were classy AF druggies (not at all lol) so we'd pack in that garbage white plastic mini fence shit, 1, to sorta mark our spot and 2, prevent people from stumbling through the ropes. Worked pretty good. Instead of people getting tangled in the ropes they'd just trip over the little fences.
