I do believe in common sense gun control. But we probably disagree on what that is. These communities are awash in illicit guns and drugs.

I'm sure he'll face some consequences, and I hope the girl is ok, but it's not surprising that attention is focused on the cop shooting the girl, as it should be. Based on what we've been shown so far it seems to me that the shooting was justified. People don't take knives seriously but I've seen enough people killed with them to feel differently. Maybe there will be more information available and that could change minds one way or the other. I wonder how the girl in pink feels about it. (BTW if the girl with the knife was swinging it at the cop I wouldn't defend the shooting. A cop should have the means to defend themselves without shooting I would hope.)

I thought I had now seen everything until I read what activist Bree Newsome said about the Columbus Ohio incident. But in thinking about it I am in total agreement. This would solve the issue and leave it up to the communities to self police. I am sure "police violence" would go down substantially and murders would also probably drop as fewer would be reported.

Teenagers have been having fights including fights involving knives for eons. We do not need police to address these situations by showing up to the scene & using a weapon against one of the teenagers. Y’all need help. I mean that sincerely.

There current training is a huge problem. But I do agree they need more training, just very different training than what they are getting. Interesting perspective and results from a small sample of police that got training from Rener Gracie (of the famous Gracie jujitsu family) and his schools.

The default position for many people has switched to “police are corrupt, fighting to maintain their institutional control and regularly get away with shooting people who don’t need to be shot”. Right or wrong, it is what it is. Police do not have the benefit of the doubt anymore.

So this latest one just gets lumped into the overall reaction against police tactics that seem to be based on anything but deescalating situations.

If the context wasn’t police shooting unarmed naked people, rolling up to within feet of a kid with an air soft then shooting him or busting the wrong door down and killing people unassociated with their warrant the reaction would probably have been “hey, it looks like that lady was trying to kill that cop, that looked reasonable.”

Context matters, and right now the context makes the cops look pretty bad on balance in my book.

For example, until recently I had given the Portland Police the benefit of the doubt on a lot of the challenges they have dealt with this year. Then, in the last month we get reporting that they have high level staff telling neighborhood associations how they should vote and that people inside the department basically colluded to try to frame a city commissioner for a DUI hit and run. So, can’t trust what they say anymore.

Context matters if they want the benefit of the doubt.
