I had the car fully examined by a mechanic and we figured it would take probably $2500-$5000 a year to maintain it, and we strongly considered that. Instead we knew that the 340X was going to be the last manual transmission model w/ AWD brought over, so we decided to buy that one, and we may decide to keep it, depending...

Ex-wife also had a ‘07 X3 which we sold to my cousin at around 111K for $5K ($1K off as it needed tires) and it promptly shit the bed, requiring $5K in repairs.
Picked up a manual ‘07 X3 on a whim, but flipped it after I decided I’d rather buy a house than concentrate on fixing it up. Would have cost about $5K to get it sorted initially.
BMW manual will fetch a nice price even if it needs repairs. Was fun to row some gears for a few months.
My 2006 325xi 6spt wagon will be up for sale in a few months as I am hoping to move across the country. ~90k miles and was in the PNW until last year so only rust is on the hitch for a bike rack. BAT pricing has gone insane so makes sense to let it go even though it still runs great and just had a bunh of big work done (water pump and shocks)
Yeah I recall those n/a 3 liter straight sixes were bulletproof.
I had the high-output variant in my e90 330i (a bit of a rare bird as it was the last n/a high-output 330 prior to going to the turbo’d (n53?) 335i, but it was clad in the new e90 body - only sold for 1 year in the US)

At the time I had a slight uphill main road that I would turn onto out of my neighborhood that went under a couple underpasses. I'd floor it with the windows down and listen to that thing howl. The echo it made under the bridges would stir your manhood.

We have a q7 tdi and a camp trailer for adventures. I was in Seattle for 12 years, just as many wagons there as there are in new england.

Q7 has been good, we have owned it for 4 years but not many miles as my wife has had health issues. It's a 5500lb tank and drives like it, smooth on the highway and tows our ~4500lb trailer very nicely. The dieselgate warranty covers most any drivetrain failure for a long time, but it is an audi and I just had to unplug a shorted door lock button that killed the battery. ~20mpg around town, 30 on the highway and 17-19 towing is nice. All that said if I didn't need to tow a highlander/pilot/similar gets similar milage on regular gas with no expensive maintenance.
But they wouldn't be nearly as nice to drive.
