Closing today? Absolutely. Wind and severe cold temps are no bueno. Not spinning 4 and closing terrain also no bueno.

What’s the scoop on ski touring in the Metaline Falls/Sullivan Lake area? I know Kootenay Pass, Salmo Ski Hill, and Whitewater are close just across the border, but does the Salmo-Priest area have much to offer in the way of stoke?

I’m also curious how it compares to the Kettles.

Salmo-Priest requires a sled IMO where the Kettles are easily done without. I wouldn’t be surprised if the salmo-priest (the furthest inland rainforest in the US) gets 2-3x the snowfall the Kettles see.

Why do you think a sled would be necessary, is it due to the lack of plowed roads? Can’t you drive up Sullivan Creek Rd a ways in the winter?

Just my experience I guess. I suppose you could this year with lack of low elevation snow. If you want to ski up high it just seems like it could be a real slog

Just an example of the wind and cold this weekend. This is from Schweitzer a couple of days ago. I can tell you from personal freezing-ass experience that yesterday was every bit as cold and windy. -42 wind chill yesterday. Today was much more pleasant at 2 on top with no wind.

yes, you could punch it up
but, thick old growth is going to shut you down
with the exception of a few meadowy zones along the road
    around the 8 mile marker

E face of Sherman Peak should be safe in a month (?)

I really appreciate the advice from all. The reason I ask is because I’m trying to decide whether to invest in some extremely cheap real estate in the Republic area or in Metaline Falls.

It's been a while since I was a "local," but the Republic area has better winter weather (more sunny days) than Metaline. Ski touring the Kettle Crest is close by (non-motorized so you don't have to compete with sleds) & there is a dedicated small backcountry touring community there.
Metaline can get a lot of rain in the winter. The advantage to Metaline is it is closer to Nelson/WH20, although Republic isn't too far from Red Mtn.

^agree with the above. Just don’t plan on consistent powder skiing in the kettles. It’s a dry, rocky place that doesn’t really fill in until January or February most years.

Big natural avy on Sherman peak from March 2018 just because I’d never seen it go like this before

I’m lucky to be in a position where I don’t have too many living expenses, and I have been saving up for quite a while (was originally going to use it for a car), but after finding some rather inexpensive yet functional lots, I changed my mind.

Just remember, there's a reason that it's still so cheap. May not be a lot of upside to it in the long run.

Bourbon if that went did the NE face of Snow Peak go too? That thing seems like it would go hudge.

RT I'll try for some pix but I think that naked women is a stretch.

NE face of Snow didn’t go natural but was really loaded that day. We didn’t go anywhere near it. Tons of whoomphing on the flats and road cuts breaking easily on the storm slab. We had a great time meadow skipping the mellower glades that day

Mt Spokane was pretty good in the back side and snowed all day. It’s been awhile since I rode that hard all day.

caught 4 runs late today before the bell and snow was also better at 49. drier & lighter than earlier in the season. cloud ceiling also higher - better visibility than usual. had chair 4 & sluice to myself.
