I have the Kurt Kinetic R1 Direct Drive. I love the side to side motion. I think it really helps me adjust my position on my saddle, and prevent me from getting sore on long rides. The Kurt Kinetic software is great, no signal drops, always connects to Zwift right away, I calibrate it once a week (just for shits and giggles) and the numbers are almost always exactly the same. I have a crank based power meter on my outside bike that I should try swapping over to my inside bike, just to see how the numbers line up.

So after years of being dumb I've decided to get smart. I like the idea of a direct drive trainer but not too keen on having to take the wheel off, plus my bike has a 10 speed cassette and from what I've seen the direct drives are 11 so I'd have to swap it out. Not a huge deal but not really what I want to do so I'm thinking a wheel on wheel is my best option. Looking at the Wahoo Snap or Kurt Road Machine. My dumb trainer is a Road Machine and it's fine but I'm kind of intrigued by the idea of the Rock and Roll Kurt...seems like the motion aspect would make things more interesting.

Any suggestions from the collective on these or others?

If anybody's got a used smart they want to unload I might be interested.
The freehub on direct drive trainers also accepts 10 speed cassettes. You can currently buy a 10 speed shimano cassette online for around $40.

GB - I've got a couple of 10-sp cassettes collecting dust. Yours for shipping.

Thanks...I've got one too, perhaps the DD option is something I should reconsider if there's that much difference between the two.

Actually a couple DD trainers on my local CL. I need to make the swap. My Kurt Road Machine works ok, but it's still a dumb trainer pretending to be a smart trainer so it's not actually accurate and possibly even an advantage for racing?

So you're saying I would have outsprinted you last night?

Very real possibility. I have heard from some people that trainers that calculate watts are not accurate and not even allowed in "real" zwift races.

kidding of course. Yeah ... get the smart trainer. It'll change the experience dramatically.

Dude you already know the only place to get ‘real’ results is on Zwift Power. Your setup won’t even be recognized on ZP, get a smart trainer!

Fellas, very fun last night. As an out-of-biking-shape slacker who had just done a hard leg workout yesterday morning I was planning to do a lap to say hi and then bail. Was too much fun to leave, so I bounced around trying to figure out how to stay with the group the whole time. Never rode in a group before on zwift. In fact, never rode without the erg on. As an ex real world racer I have some habits I need to unlearn, like when we got over the climb that first lap I started coasting on the downhill only to see you bastards disappear (no coasting in zwift, apparently, even on downhills) then spent 2 miles chasing back, laughing and cursing my stupidity the whole time. That happened to someone else the next lap I think.

Then I decided I would just drop out on the last climb, but Yanos (I think) rode by as I went to get off, so I hopped back on and rode home with him. Pretty damn fine effort on his part for the first ride back after covid (if I've kept my riders straight.) I clearly have a lot to learn and did way too much yoyoing, but was super fun. Thanks all. Thanks for not sticking anything in my spokes.

You should be able to run 10spd w/o any issues. In some cases there may be a really slim spacer to make it compatible.

If I vote for 2 laps does that mean we can keep it at 3?

Yeah the zwift group dynamics take some adjustment. The draft effect is lower (like around half of real life I think), so you always have to be on it, even downhill unless it's steep and fast enough to super tuck.

There's also a cumulative speed effect of the blob so that it goes faster without actually needing to organize and take turns. So for example some guy tries to go off the front, he can sit there doing 5+ w/kg and the group will catch up even with everyone else doing much less. Essentially, you can't do it, so don't try. That also means you really don't want to fall off the back because you'll never catch back up.

Question for the guys who rode on week 1:
IF we made the start time of ride 1hr or 1.5hr earlier, would you still be able to make the ride?
A bunch of the East Coast guys want it earlier, but I don’t want to change the time and loose 6 guys to gain 2 or 3 new East Coast riders?

Maybe an East coast night and a west coast night? Us in the middle can likely make both nights and keep a decent volume of peeps in the group?

Jamal, what night is the Missoula group ride/race? Weds?

The new series starts next thursday, and they are at 5:15 now. They're longer routes and I think the idea is more of a group ride than a race but I'm sure it can be as hard as you want it to be.

If anyone here wants to join, signup here and follow Shaun on zwift and you should get an invite every week

Earlier is fine for me. That other thing I disappeared for last night is a 6:45 mst ride/race I'd like to try to do on a regular basis. I think the length was probably good too.

How about a Tuesday Night and Thursday Night ride. One 6:00 EST (4:00 MNT) and one 6:00 MST (8:00 EST)
I'm good for both. nights either time. I'll set it up for next week once I see a bit more feedback.

I’m bummed I missed Tuesday that sounded like a lot of fun.
This would be rad. I wouldn’t ever be able to make the earlier EC ride b/c work, but will probably be able to make the 6pm mst laps.

Extra points if we do BOTH rides in the same day?

(cause I'm sick in the head and trying to drop lbs)

edit: and if we schedule two on the same day EWG can have his three laps .... pansy.

I am in for any times between 4pm to 6pm MST. I would love to ride both nights if we do a Tues and Thurs ride. Selfishly I would like the Tuesday ride to stay at it's current time of 6pm MST and the Thursday (east coast night) ride be at 4pm MST so I can hit both.
