For the record, I've never heard a native WNYer call it I-86. It's either 17 or the Soutern Tier Expressway. Fun fact .... the first time I hit 100 mph in a car was in high school in my parent's Pontiac 5000 S(fucking)E on that road between Hornell and Angelica on my way to Holimont. Yes, it had the digital dash.

Totally. I never quite figured out how, but Pontiac claimed you could play Space Invaders with the buttons on the steering wheel.

Pontiac 5000. Forgot about that car.

I may or may not have plowed a Pontiac 5000 five feet into a snow bank on a left hand turn coming into Old Forge on the way to ski McCauley. There may or may not have been an overly high rated of speed and a sliding 270 degree spin involved.

I don’t believe may poor parents ever found out why the car was so hard to align in subsequent years.

I can confirm, however, that despite aforementioned setback, my brother and I had some extremely fun turns at McCauley that day.

Good ole Pontiac 5000. Hard to break that car, it turns out.

Holy hell, that's more buttons than an F1 race steering wheel.

Cool car. My dad had a 85 'Vette temporarily, I still remember the digital instrument cluster. Mind blown.
Yes, it's 17 or Southern Tier. No I-86. For setting land speed records, I preferred the 390 - Geneseo to Dansville has some great sections to open it up.

The wife had a Fiero in high school. No GT, no screaming chicken on the hood and no engine fire.

    It was red though.

It's 17 like the bridge is the Tappan Zee. it's just that simple.

I still want an 86 Fiero GT like the one in the pic. That 5000 STE with AWD was an awesome car, I tried so hard to convince my parents they wanted one but they ended up with an 85 Marquis. The Merc wasn't a bad car, at least it was RWD, it was nice to drive, handled well enough for parental units and was pretty plush but toss it into a corner and it protested or it just went straight (off the road). The fact that it was based on the same platform as the Fox Body Mustangs meant it had potential but mom wasn't into realizing that potential.

Mine also survived a late 80's road trip to Vermont which included three dumb fucks sleeping overnight in it in the MRG parking lot.

I just did a shot of coffee, does that count? I typed 86, meant 88, the one with the V6 and fake fastback rear. I saw a blue one a few months ago that got me all jazzed up for them again. I need to get past this thing I have for the more esoteric (pita) vehicles...

I’m gonna have to do the loop again this week- southern Tier to WNY and back. Any questions for the locals?

I think I'm also going to be along 17 this week. I need to stop in Binghamton then up to Syracuse.

    Speed trap in Cortland.

I'll be ROC to PHL through Binghamton next weekend to pick up daughter #1 from Nova. In other words, plan on snow next weekend.

A couple weeks ago I was driving back from visiting family in Jersey, and was on 287. The signs on the Jersey side still say "Tappan Zee Bridge", but a couple hundred yards across the state line it's the Governor My Dad Bridge.

I was listening to 88am, all news, traffic and weather on the 8s, and the traffic guy called it the Tappen Zee. As he should.

Btw, I blew over that thing doing 70 or more last week, and two troopers were sitting over in the right shoulder, spaced about 200 yards. There's so much room now they can do that. The speed limit is 45. I thought I was toast, but, just lucky.

I didn't know they changed the name. Interesting.

My Father was the maitre d at the Tappen Hill. He died in the same room of the hospital where I was born at Phelps Memorial and my parents' first place was a cottage that the moonies bought, kicked them out, and turned into a compound in Irvington.

I think it’s 55 unless there’s a wind warning. Also, if the troopers are window to window it means they’re bullshitting and you’re probably in the clear.
