In the 2000's it was a race to the highest IBU, boiling hops to get higher amounts of alpha acids. Now it is the opposite. Throwing hops in after the boil, or during fermentation, trying to get other things from the hops and fewer alpha acids. This results in a smoother, more drinkable hoppiness that is accentuated by higher protein malts and less flocculent yeast.

Yep, Lady’s dad is all about it back in MI. We scored 4packs for 11.99 while visiting this winter.

I for one am still all in on the haze train. There’s a juicy hop wash you get with really well done ones that is extremely rare in west coast styles. My lovely wife and I have the same taste in beer so it just reinforces itself. More and more breweries are making high quality hazies but you still have to work to find really excellent ones.

M43 is quite good and I will always happily sign up for it, but I have to admit to it being slightly harsh. After a couple years of drinking it I still can’t decide of that is purposeful or not. Either way, it turns even some hazy fans off.

I was stoked to find out that my new LLS stocks Maine Beer Company brews. I had never had Lunch or Another One previously. Stellar, if expensive.

I am going to question the "nationally available" status of that M-43 as I hain't ever seen it in the parts of Cali or NV where I regularly purchase my beer...

Blinding Sunrise Pure Nelson Hopped Sunny West Coast IPA
    Slice Beer Company, Lincoln, CA
    ABV: 7.0%
    Hops: Nelson

A nice, well balanced W/C style, which is clean tasting with a faint spiciness. The hop bitterness is even tempered and on the mild side, plus finishes well, with that faint spiciness rounding out the mouth feel.

Anyone else getting the ads for SN Celebration on here lately? They're making me thirsty! I'll admit it's been eclipsed a bit by other beers, but I still enjoy it.

Costco had cases of it last week. I like the beer, but don't want that much of it.

It's extremely rare because it's completely off style. I really don't want my beer to be "juicy." Obviously some people do, and that's fine. Hazy IPA is a beer style designed for people who don't actually like IPA.

I'm not with ya there. I LOVE IPAs, to the point where I barely drank anything else for years while spending much of my working hours working for industry icons that made their name with big, clear gnarly IPAs. I love IPAs, seriously. Yet I like juicy IPAs better. I don't get the juicy people bagging on clear folks and the clear folks bagging on juicers. I very much believe, after years professionally tasting styles, that both juicy IPA and clear IPAs are fundamentally the same style. Yes, there are juicy IPAs that get so sweet they lose their IPAness, but there are also BelgianIPAs and fruit IPAs and other beers that I don't think fit the classic IPA style.

But I will say that RR Pliny, Treehouse Green, Firestone IPA, Heady Topper, Alesmith IPA, Lawson's SofS, ORB In the Steep, and La Cumbre Elevated are all world class versions of the same style, but some are clear and some are juicy. And there is a reason that they are all in the same judging category. I know very few people that really like M43, to use an example higher in the thread, that don't also really like Ballast Sculpin.

I am with you EWG. I drank almost exclusively IPAs for years before the the haze craze. I have now switched to primarily hazy. The brands that I purchase from have really shifted and I imagine this to be true for a lot of people. Gotta think some of the west coast breweries that have not adapted have taken a hit to their bottom line.

I do now find that the brands I drink are more diverse geographically. Chicago, Maine, etc. I am Colorado heavy because I find hazy is best super fresh. La Cumbre isn’t far and is awesome. ODD13 seems to have a great handle on hazy as does crooked stave.

Well, my quip about people who like hazy IPAs don't really like IPAs was a bit tongue in cheek, but I still don't really understand the ridiculous popularity. It seems like lately only one style can be king and at least half of the shelf space in stores is then dedicated to that particular style. Can't we get a little more diversity on store shelves?

Funny about M-43. Upthread is the first I've ever heard of it and I grew up about ten miles from the brewery (which I hadn't heard of, either).

If all you drink are hazy IPAs you are missing out on so much. Someday you'll be limping your fat ass to your frequent bathroom visits because of gout and IBS and wish you had sipped a nice pilsner every once in a while.

You think God intended for beer to be filtered? I guess he was pretty stoked when 1880 rolled around.

Now now. Originally you said 45.5. Which is funny because that’s exactly 16oz a day for a year and also funny cause i know that without doing the math.

Yeah, because I fucked up the math, and was going for about a 6 pack a day for a year. Nice catch!

That’s what happens when you are 5 hazys in. Also, respect for being 5 hazys in.

I am drinking an Outer Range Squiggles right now. Dead nuts fantastic. Mosaic and Columbus if I remember correctly. Highly recommend. In my top 20, maybe pushing top 10.

    A few I've had recently

    Enjoyed on 10/31

Current favorite from Pizza Port. They've had an awesome run of seasonal cans this year available locally. And none of that 4-pack BS. They only do 6-packs of 16oz cans.

Found some of this in Durango of all places.
