For those scoring at home. That is $360,000 in engines alone. 2500 HP. Some stupid money flying around here lately. I know 4 guys at my kids' school that took ownership of brand new Whalers during covid. None of them were smaller than 27 ft. Those are getting like $300- 450,000 right now. WTF?

If you are serious, let us know what the budget is. I can find you just about anything solid within a certain budget. How much labor and extra $$ you will need to put into it may vary.

Despite some very good advice from some peeps here, I went ahead and bought a boat late last year. Used = check. Used in the ocean = check. In/Out powertrain = check. Bottom paint = check. Went against everything you guys told me .

The good: higher-end builder (Sea Ray) and proven hull design. Single anal-retentive owner for 95% of her life. New 4.3L engine installed last year... I had to put a little bit of work into her this spring (trailer wheels/tires, re-carpet bunks, re-wire lights, gimbal bearing and boots on the outdrive) but after that I did nothing but enjoy her all summer. I'm into it for about $1,500 less than the price of the down payment to join a boat club (as was recommended here as well).

Cool. I saw one of those tied up today, it kind jumped out at me for whatever reason. The guy had a canvas storage cover over the whole stern area that looked pretty nice for keeping rain and leaves and seagull shit out of it, it fit perfectly, maybe it was from sea-ray. Glad you had fun with it mang.

We don't know shit. Glad you are having fun with it. Just tough to find any mechanics here that will touch I/Os anymore.
Sea Ray makes a nice product. They sell a shitton of them.

Bayliners are pretty shit, but if they have an outboard hanging off the back, most of that shit can be fixed or maintained.
If it is an I/O, run don't walk.

They have the same Merc. I/Os that the other guys do. IMHO the problem is that everything else is shittier than on more expensive craft e.g. SeaRay. Fit&finish, literally all the switches, cleats & hardware, b side hatch finish (not gel coated sometimes just painted plywood) etc... that said I have a ‘13 175 bow rider that served very well this summer. It is unquestionably jankier than any of the better brands of the same vintage but does the job. It’ll probably be too small for next summer as it’s only rated for 7 - perfect for quarantine with just our family of 5!

And yes, really just a lake boat, though I did bring it up to Orcas Is. for a week of fair weather knocking around...

Edit: mine had new bottom paint when I bought it, it’s pretty rough after 1 year... found out it’s the ablative type when I hit it with the pressure washer, DOH!

I've been in Marine propulsion my entire career, and the first massive project I was on is this one, Gentry Eagle 1989 TransAtlantic winner. 62hrs, and 7 minutes across the pond



Met Richard Branson on the Scilly Isles which is the end point of the race where he gave his trophy to Tom Gentry.
Spent some days at Cowes week where we got the place of honor. Drank ourselves silly



The boat got converted to a yacht and we did 2 tours of the Superyacht Med tour



Propulsion was 2 x 16cyl MTU TB94, and 1 x Avco Lycoming TF40 gas turbine (my responsibility)




We spent 6 weeks in Greenwich CT waiting for a weather window, and enjoyed the hell out of terrorizing Long Island Sound "keeping the bottom clean"



Also was involved in the USN LCAC - bizarre hardware capable of 60 knots while hauling 60 tons, and 20 knots on land. Hauling the main battle tank at at speed was a trip.

Now doing merchant HUDGE engines and alternate fuels (LNG, Methanol, Ethane, LPG and now ammonia). Not as exciting, but I'm getting old anyway.

Agreed, just I find fit and finish to be fixable, for the right entry price. If it has wood in the transom, hard pass. But that goes for most older boats at this point. Though it is pretty easy to check for water intrusion, and a transom redo is not the worst job ever. As long as the stringers are solid, it is fixable. Again, huge negotiating chip to cash in.

The point about I/Os is not a dig on I/O. I kinda like them, especially on lakes. The new ones that run backwards are pretty slick and let you wake surf behind an I/O. My worry on I/O is service. There is a huge gap in knowledge in any trade industry right now. Most of the engine techs around here are over 50. Not one of those guys wants to crawl around inside a small engine compartment. This is a real problem that needs to be considered. If you don't have a good source for service close by, I wouldn't get anything other than an outboard. This problem is only going to get worse. It is a huge part of the reason you see so many manufacturers going outboard now. Much easier to service, or pluck off the back and replace. Plus the gas mileage and draft advantages can't be ignored.

The MTU's were on waterjets, and the centerline turbine was on an Arneson surface drive which was pulled up when not in use. Tom had one prop pitched for maximum rooster tail just for laughs when doing publicity tours (this pic was with the performance pitched prop). One estimate was that there was 20 tons of water in the air at full throttle.

Thanks brother, and its funny you mention custom-fit canvas storage covers - where the fuck do you find custom fit canvas storage covers?? That is the one thing I've been unsuccessful with this year. I have the snap-on cover for the passenger area but I really want a storage cover. Especially since this is the second time I've paid for shrink-wrap for the winter.

I understand your problem with I/Os, and appreciate you elaborating on it more in another post, and Im really, really lucky in that sense. There is a "marina" about 15 minutes away from me in a really shady city (Ice, Fitchburg??) that looks like a run down POS. However, the guy that runs it is super nice and has been really honest in my experience. He hires a bunch of Brazilian boat mechanics and all they do is work on older I/O boats. Its the kind of place that only accepts cash, but they do good work and like I said, I trust the owner, he has treated me very well.
