Floating condo. Love the MJM's too, but yeah. Sabre used seems a little more reasonable. Used MJM can be found for good $$ too.

VTeton- That looks like an awesome ship for someone that planned to buy new and got a bit of sticker shock.
I am more into finding the slightly beat up older boats that need some attention and have current owners that need rid of them because they moved onto their new toy.

Didn't take any photos, but I got the chance to take a spin in an early 60s ChrisCraft ski boat this past weekend. What a cool sensory experience, part detroit muscle, part wood shop.

What are the collective's thoughts on a 2007 bayliner 185 bow rider for SoCal? Back in the day my brothers and I had a similarly sized center console on Long Island. Trying to get back on the water without breaking the bank.

    Tech talk (jong)?

bayliners and bowriders are two words that cause conniptions on thehulltruth and I'm not sure I've ever seen them used together in a sentence there, I think they'd stroke out.

But I mean if the thing's in decent shape and you don't get too ambitious on where you go with it and you watch the weather and all that shit it should be pretty fun for pretty short money. It's really made more for lakes so keep that in mind for sure.

not telling you anyting new or revelatory, we always thought they sucked just based on plywood content, (full disclosure i'd never heard of hulltruth until a few minutes ago). and that was for lake use by southern rednecks. iceotzi knows a shitton more that me; I'd think SoCal Pacific would thrash a bayliner pretty quickly.

Alright, I appreciate the responses even if they're cold water. Didn't know about the plywood construction. I'll keep an eye out for something more suitable.

I don't think modern Bayliners have any wood in their construction.

Back in the 90's they were pretty shitty but something from a 2007 will be well built and should give you reasonably trouble free use. They are still a budget brand so don't expect top notch finishings or anything.

They are definitely a lake boat though, so evaluate your usage carefully.

Bayliners are pretty shit, but if they have an outboard hanging off the back, most of that shit can be fixed or maintained.

A family I know just bought a brand new 18ft bayliner.... ughhhh... lives right near ICE and the canal. Three kids under 10 yrs old. One wave over the bow and they will be trading it in. I begged them not to buy it.

NYC ER Dr. and fancy college professor. They should have gotten a 28ft cris craft.

A bowrider with a family in it flipped near the mouth of the canal in 2017, the kid they talk about rescuing in the article apparently died later. Granted it was overloaded and that's a notoriously rough spot and they shouldn't have been there at all, but still. https://boston.cbslocal.com/2017/07/...ital-cape-cod/

Man...even if you had to throw some $$$$ at them...they'd still be worth it. Such beautiful boats.
It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

Have you ever seen someone at the launch ramp spend 30 minutes trying to get those old wooden boats started? No thank you. Very cool to look at though!

I talked my way onto a 28' Gar Wood for a spin out of Newport harbor for me and two brothers once. But that's another story. From my spot in the rearmost seat the ride was cush the sound was throaty and all the heads turned.

Plus, they really need to be in the water all the time, so the wood swells.
Fiberglass was the best thing that ever happened to boats.

Interesting, I didn’t recognize this one from the listing, a Hinkman Sea Sled. I saw that weird hull and thought that doesn’t look stable at all, the mutihulls are way too close together.

Turns out that’s not the case and it’s actually a reverse vee bow, not a multi hull. Found this short article that is really interesting. I guess the inventor was a bit of a mad scientist and he even built one of these into an aircraft carrier for a single bomber.

HE EVEN ANSWERED THE TREADMILL QUESTION IN 1918! The bomber takes off!

Cool, short, read on a weird but apparently capable hull.

edit: huh. from continuouswave.com: Head On View Whaler 13 Hull
The original Whaler hull evolved from the Hickman Sea Sled. The two outer hulls are "runners". Fisher and Hunt evolved the third central appendage to reduce "airy water" being created by air trapped under the boat and flowing into the propeller. This photo shows a more recent hull evolution. The wrap-around bow chine--the "smirk"--was not in the original molds.

Here's an amazing 50' Cary with inboards in immaculate condition for short short money: https://www.boattrader.com/boat/1988...press-7484746/

The boat probably cost hundreds of thousands (maybe a million? maybe more?) to get into this condition. It would cost a fortune to keep it in this condition, hence the price. But wow what a rig. Will do 50 kts.
