Okay. Why don’t you ask it and I will answer it according to my natural workflow, as enabled by (but so infuriatingly circumvented) inter office chat.
Just ignore the chat? Usually works for me...

That's what I do. If they call me on it, I just say I must have disabled it or something. I don't get many chats anymore.

Well that’s counterproductive. I WANT them to message me with their quick questions. I just don’t want to chase them for their questions.

Also, if I expect responsiveness from them (I do) it’s only fair to be responsive in kind to them.

You guys are a fucking treat to work with, I can tell.
    focus.

    Shit that annoys you

I don’t know what that means. But I guess that probably means I’m for sure a user/loser.

    Works for me.

    Blue headlights annoy me.

You want to speed or drive like a douche on the freeway, seems like something that makes you stick out like a sore thumb isn't the smartest idea

When there’s only one pump available at the station and it’s the one with diesel and some brainiac has dumped diesel all over the fucking ground and you have to step in it to get to the pump.

Diesel takes longer to evaporate. The brainiacs have been spilling at other pumps as well, but gasoline evaporates faster than water.

Yesterday: company IT dept announces a whole slate of services that will now require secondary authentication via text message or phone call to access.

Today: company announces it will no longer provide company phones or reimbursement for mobile phones, land lines or internet connections.

IT dept is adamant the company's security policy will still apply to devices used for secondary authentication... no unapproved apps, blocking websites when traffic uses office wi-fi, etc.

Sorry fuckers, if you're not paying for it you can keep your grubby hands off my device, and don't expect to contact me on it after hours. Company email getting uninstalled.

    This.

I've never owned a mobile phone of my own - for the last 20 years "The Man" has provided one for me. But *if* I had a phone of my own - they could take that shit and stuff it.

Precisely. That's my personal policy. If you're not paying for my phone or other device then I am CLOCKED OUT after hours. If you want to access me after hours then you had better (A) pay for the service and (B) pay me enough to make that nonsense worth my while. Companies these days want to treat employees like they're always on-call, but not pay squat for such a thing. Sadly too many little butt smooching minions fall right in line with that BS and make answering calls/e-mails on late nights and weekends an expectation. Always the workaholics who have NO life who create such expectations.

Mobile tech and e-mail has become more of a burden than ever before IMO. Instead of making us more efficient thus working less hours as was predicted would happen back in the 70s/80s, we're just expected to crank out way more work at a faster pace as well as being accessible 24-freaking-7. Not cool.

You can thank my dad for the tip. [that's what he'd always do for us.]

And when the office staff would come in on Monday AM and find the leavings of suture in the garbage, they'd ask him which of the kids got themselves whacked over the weekend. (It was usually me; 3 sets of sutures in my head - I guess I always led with my head.)

My "company" doesn't pay for cell phones, and says that cell phone access to things like email is optional. I choose to have such access because it makes my life easier to have it, even if it also benefits them.

It is interesting, though, they have 2 factor auth for our laptops, without providing cell phones. Never thought about that one before.

Ha, yeah. We already had 2-factor auth on a few things. Then the company would dick around and not pay the cell phone bill, carrier would lock the account, and no one could log in. Brilliant. At least we won't have that problem anymore.

Their take is everyone needs a cell phone now for personal use, so why should they pay for them for business use? Fair enough. But authentication is one thing. If they expect us to use it regularly for remote work and apply their security policies to it, they better damn well pay for it. What it really comes down to is they're just being cheap assholes. A lot of the lines have been around forever and are grandfathered at $15/mo with unlimited data. AT&T or Verizon won't let people bring those plans along when they port the numbers over. So the company will save $15 but it will cost the employee $50-100/mo depending on carrier and plan. It doesn't register that $15/mo is not a lot of savings considering how much they will piss people off. And with a recurring bill as a monthly reminder. But they've gotta cut costs!

Haven't you ever answered an email or phone question a day or two later and the person says, "Oh, we figured it out!" Well, if I entertained instant text messages, these clowns would never figure shit out on their own. I like to think I'm fostering hands on learning.

    "Bright lights save lives?"

But what if the bright light is what distracts the driver?
