Yeah I know, none of us are perfect. Even the best of us make mistakes. I remember reading about a grass fire that started from cars being parked on dry vegetation at a firefighters annual barbeque. d'Oh!

CalFire made a large evacuation areas (mandatory and warning) for the Jones Fire. 4,000 homes under mandatory evacuation and 12,000 homes under evacuation warning. It got windy this afternoon and the fire picked up for a little while. I'm right on the edge of the evacuation area. Literally, i walked into it to get my mail from the box. Hoping for the best.

National Preparedness Level raised to 5 (out of 5). Generally means that military is being mobilized to address resource shortages.

The fucking govt made the process to contract with the FS so convoluted, I dropped off contract this year because I forgot to submit a photo of my truck, which was a new requirement this year for the three year contracts I would be working under now.

I saw correspondence amongst the COs that they were advertising for contractors because so many have decided the bureaucracy has become has unbearable (and its also unsustainable), but they keep piling more shit into the process to make sure that, eventually, one large national company will take over as the forests get privatized.

Yah; friends of ours in Lake County have avoided serious damage in all of the last 10 years of mega-fires, but we just got word that their entire property including all buildings is gone. Were able to get their horses out, fortunately.

What's the best way to keep abreast of current fire size/location? My sister's had to pack up and prepare to leave and I figure I should watch from a distance instead of my parents worrying too much

Caltopo plus Google Maps base layer plus "Fire Activty" check box. Depending on fire location and jurisdiction Inciweb is a good bet for the morning updates.

Inciweb for federal fires, state fire agency I would assume for other fires. Calfire in CA.
Excellent map in this article (about the Lake/sonoma/napa counties fire) for the Natl interagency Fire Center site but I can't find it on the site.

grrr. so sad that it's still so hard to get fire information. inciweb's interface is worse than two years ago and if you have some kind of incident managed by somebody like Calfire it is on their own equally terrible website. absolutely mind-blowing with today's technology that it's so difficult to get the most current information from a fire. for fuck's sake even an instagram video of the entire morning briefing would be an improvement for a whole hell of a lot of large incidents.
