Thanks man. We are 1/3 mile behind the evacuation line, so are good for now. I don't think we will be threatened by fire. CalFire has built a line north of town from route 1 to Route 9. If that holds, town and campus will be okay. Loads are people are losing their homes. Friends of ours have lost their home, alone with a bunch of colleagues. It is pretty crazy to see first hand. For my family, currently the biggest issue has been falling ash and air quality. Small issue compared to those losing homes, but it has been hard watching the fire burn through our figurative backyard and the trails and spaces we utilize regularly and know so well.

We spent Sunday on Waddell Beach to beat the heat. It was over 100F at my house that day. The start of the fire was clearly visible, with a smile plume on the northern ridge of Big Basin at the coast. We watched as aircraft dropped retardant. It felt light and fun, and as if this was a small blaze that would soon be out, and we enjoyed the show while the kids played in the small surf. I went back Wednesday morning for a dawn patrol surf. I saw a road closure sign after Davenport, but after a few miles figured it had been left out. As I rounded the corner near Greyhound Rock I saw it. First speckles of light up on the mountain side that at first I thought we engine lights. As I drove, they blended together into flickers and then flames. I could see the entire ridge lines both north and south of Rancho del Oso alight. And the road block was just 100 yards ahead. I returned to the pull out by Greyhound and watched for 20 minutes, and then went home. It was clear then that this was no small fire. By noon we had thick ash falling in our yard.

This morning things feel hopeful. They have now two solid lines in just to our north, as well as an established line on the north side of the complex and Davenport has been boxed out. The big concern is another lightning storm headed up the coast to arrive this evening. Strong winds and lighting strikes are possible. Moderate west and SW winds are forecast this afternoon, along with lower humidity and there is a lot of concern about the communities in San Lorenzo Valley.

This has all given me a new appreciation for wildfires, our first responders and Cal Fire. They are all doing an amazing job.

Oh, and fuck the fucking looters. One asshole even broke into a CalFire engine to steal shit. Who the fuck does that? I say toss them into the blaze.
Wow. Having lived all over Santa Cruz and the mountains, this sounds crazy. Where does the fire line start on 1 that goes to hiway 9? holy shit. Is this the one burning into Great Basin? Boulder Creek evacuated? Ben Lomond? Sorry, I haven't seen much news lately but I've been sucking in the smoke over here for days now. You live on the west end of town?

Looks like a few lightning strikes in the Sierras from my view. Hopefully not 10k like last storm. Air is super dry so no chance of rain coming down except for the high peaks (maybe).

A couple of our oaks leaves turned brown from this latest heat spell. Hopefully they are ok. The experts say not to water oaks here especially midsummer but I’m tempted to put a soaked hose on them out around the drip line away from the trunk.

Awakened by thunder, lightning and rain at 3:30 am as it rolled through. A good rain in Reno continuing as I type. Could have sworn I watched a bolt rip into the Summit Sierra mall less than a mile away. Read the NYT online just now and saw the fire evacs in Santa Cruz extended down the SLV into Felton. Sure would hate to see Henry Cowell Redwoods burn. Used to run there every morning. And the evac'd the college? wow.

Very close thunder/lightning woke me up in squaw at 1230 this morning. Followed 20 minutes later by some good rain with continuing thunder/ lightning... foggy and smokey this morning. It's been eerie thr last few days that's for sure.

Northern New Mexico is getting fires, usually at this time of year the grass is greening up from near-daily monsoon rains. Resource shortage is hampering efforts on the larger fire just west of the Santa Fe ski area.

If it's SOD you're royally fucked - shouldn't sell that wood. Not sure what you can do with it, actually.

Not sure if any of this is true, but it feels right.

I don’t know what SOD stands for, but I’d be all over that oak for firewood.

Dig around on this and look for your fire and kmz file under Infrared map. Will give you a active fire edge layer over google map. They fly this every night on the big ones to track growth.

Pray for snow friends it dirty August for sure!

    "Something" Oak Disease??

Never understood the point of using obscure acronyms. Does it make people feel smarterer?

I think the main line is up through Wilder. Easiest thing to build would be up Wilder Loop to Eucalyptus Loop to Chinquapin to UConn. There is already a road in for most of that. OTOH, they may have connected the city dump and up from there.

I think we saw the secondary line going up along the border of Wilder and Moore Creek Preserve which abuts Western Drive. So maybe a 1/2 mile west of Western.

They boxed in Davenport, but are trying to connect that line with the Wilder line to protect Route 1 in that vicinity.

The fire is worst in the Bobby Doon area. Ice Cream Grade, Pine Martin zones. Moon Rocks I assume.

Also bad further up Empire and down Alba a bit toward 9.

From what i understand it is not in Fall Creek, but did extend down Empire to within about a mile of Twin Gates. If you know the incline it goes up just past the Quarry road, just past Smith Grade, that was the extent down it made before sW flow slowed it.

All of SLV down to Paradise Park and ICSc, and Scotts Valley Wes of 17 is evacuated. Zones toward 35 have a Warning.

Lots of bandits afoot. Some asshole broke into a CalFire engine, stole a firefighters wallet and drained his. And account. Fucking crazy times.

Air is pretty clear this evening. It is nice for the change but so distraught of friends and community loss this past week. Unreal.

Oh, and be careful of GoFundMe. Already had two fraudulent ones set up for this fires. Assholes are assholes.

Currently, the wind is up valley. Good for Felton, bad for further up valley and up and over the ridge.

As always, Stephen Pyne’s writing about wildfire knocks it out of the park
    https://www.latimes.com/opinion/stor...ire-california

Too often various kinds of experts use fire to advance their own agendas, proposing solutions — such as more commercial logging on public lands or simply buying more air tankers and engines — that have little to offer in terms of living with fire and bending the curve of its worst effects. Fire isn’t listening any more than COVID-19 cares about Twitter tantrums.
