There’s a more accurate way to compare coronavirus deaths to the flu

As Faust describes it, the issue boils down to this: The annual flu mortality figures published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are estimates produced by plugging laboratory-confirmed deaths into a mathematical model that attempts to correct for undercounting. Covid-19 death figures represent a literal count of people who have either tested positive for the virus or whose diagnosis was based on meeting certain clinical and epidemiological criteria.

its called Covid 19 because that is the naming convention ... Corona Virus in 2019. Consider "the spanish flu" had nothing to do with spain but spain could report it because they were neutral SO there were no wartime censors

I think it started in China, I don't think it was from eating bats, I think it could have been brought into the market by some one/anyone from a rural area who lived near the caves where bats hung out

We have seen how contagious Covid19 is so doesnt matter where it started, how a country handles it is more important, the fact it started in China gave the world extra time to react and some countries ( Britain, Sweden, USA ) squandered that headstart

I actualy wish Covid never started, but you bringing up that ^^ idea makes us wonder about you ?

I would have thought the difference would have been more even with taking out NY so that surprized me. Really shows affect of NY on the overall numbers in US. So yes the messaging esp at Federal level in Canada has been much different ( better) the real output wasn't that different. Maybe it just goes to show how little Trumps act and inaction effected the outcome?

^ The report doesn't just exclude New York City. It also excludes New York State, New Jersey and Connecticut. Excluding an entire region changes things. I guess in some sense that's a useful comparison but relying on cherry-picked data to fit a preferred political narrative...

Maybe Canada sees a turn for the worse and America sees a turn for the better. Ideally, both countries see the New York region as cautionary tale about what could happen and don't let their guard down as the virus spreads to less affected regions.

Not sure how you reached this conclusion...I thought I have been pretty clear through out this and other threads that I am on the side of people not dying of this pandemic. After 35 years in practice I am as far from the ivory tower as it gets. Of course morans like you think anybody with an education is an ivory tower elite, so there is that.

That was a strong album, some pretty good songs on it.

Like so many songs "Turning Japanese" is not about what you initially think.

    Carry on.

As this story is from CBC, their preferred political narrative is to promote almost mindlessly the superiority of the Canadian health care system and to be as anti Trump as possible. I imagine that story pitch was " why don't we see how better Canada is doing compared to US with the NY state out break taken out" did analysis and oops !!

That CBC article was poor. Frankly their journalism has been disappointing. The usual look at how bad the Americans suck and passive aggressive oh us Canucks are doing good eh. Some insight into what best practices are and how any nation (including Canada) can achieve those best practices would be nice. All the mainstream media in Canada have been guilty of highlighting the "if it bleeds, it leads" mentality.
