You don’t find it bizarre that they are asking Bill how long till a vaccine will be available? Etc, etc? He built a computer in his garage...that I’ll give him. And yeah, I do know about his foundation, interest in this subject etc...

Don't take what I said in this post too seriously. There are certainly more than a few grains of truth in it but unfortunately for me it isn't possible to completely avoid the low risk world--we have to go to the grocery store, occasionally the hardware store, and my wife thinks having the dog groomed is essential. But as you say, the big problem is the nursing homes. For the most part that is the population dying of flu, despite vaccines, and of course dying of everything else there is to die of except maybe gun shot wounds. While it seems to me and probably most everyone else who's not in one, dying of Covid 19 might be better than being in a nursing home, but I suspect most people who are in one thought that way but now want to live. The will to live is very very strong--about as primal as it gets.

And cruise ships ie floating nursing homes.

We will develop herd immunity faster if we open things up now, but if that is our goal then we also have to do away with masks, distancing, hand washing, etc. Which means the elderly, even if we lie low, will still get sick and die, although maybe not as often as if we drag this thing out forever. Like everyone else here, I don't know what we should do, and the people who have to decide don't either.

Hope this is all over by July 18--my birthday, I turn 70 so my risk shoots up about 5% that day. (PM KQ for gift suggestions.)

BTW I got my pulse ox in the mail today. Made in China. Seems to work ok. And then it dawned on me--Covid 19 is so China can sell us more stuff. (If that was on your gift list for me, sorry, I already have one.)

Haha..funny. I was literally walking our dog with my daughter an hour ago, looking at what few heavenly bodies we could see in the city, she was using my SkyView app.
I told her that there were people that that actually believed that the earth was flat...she was perplexed. It was funny.

    But good try.

It's a fair point comparing known with unknown so just comparing confirmed cases and confirmed deaths the United States has about a third of world's total. The US also has the highest number of new confirmed cases globally and the US (population 330 million) has overtaken the European Union (population 446 million) death rate.

Maybe none of that matters in the sense comparisons between countries are meaningless because of testing differences but what does matter are the trends. The confirmed cases are worsening every day for the US vs the rest of the world.

    Meanwhile

Orange County, Florida, police arrested a man on trespassing charges for camping out at Walt Disney World, which has been shuttered and emptied due to the coronavirus, AL.com reports. Richard McGuire, 42, took up residence earlier this week on Discovery Island, an abandoned wildlife park in the middle of a lake in the amusement park, and planned to stay for seven days, he told police. When deputies told him it wasn’t a public area, he said he didn’t know. He said he had come to Discovery Island because it “looked like a tropical paradise.”

It amazes me that people haven't realized that America has been this way already for quite some time.

He's right. Herd immunity in the absence of a vaccine would be a loss, plain and simple. Easily 1MM people could die on our way to 60% infected. Obviously that number could be worse if we don't rush to spread and immunize naturally, but the BEST path is to continue to slow the spread as much as possible among everyone until we have a vaccine.

France extends lockdown 2 months. And what’s wrong with these numbers, 25,000 dead from 167,000 sick? Doesn’t sound like good odds.

That's pretty much over, the subways will stop from 1-5am every night so that every active car can be cleaned and disinfected. Before the train goes into the barn it will be emptied.

Tricky for Switzerland's cross border workers. My office is progressively opening starting Monday. All our french workers will be stuck in France. But my company is very generous, no one loses a paycheck regardless. Fortunately I'm on the IT side and will be remote indefinitely.

France/Macron fucked up royally. *kiss kiss*

Clever. But, Life During Wartime is fully applicable these days unedited. One of my favorite songs of all times. I know parody is supposed to be flattery, however it's like if I were a follower of Islam and somebody spoofed the Koran. Don't mess with it. Or we will need a fatwa against you detailing severe punishment.
