Sorry just noticed mofro and Mustonen reposted
Study looks solid. Small n but at this stage it's not like they're going to enroll hundreds. The fact that the test group is significantly older than the control group yet fares better is encouraging too given the increased mortality risk for older patients.
I'm not sure what the current stocks of hydroxychloroquine are. Anti-malarial agents are exactly in high demand in the US and who knows what the production capacity is like given the fact that there's barely any money to be made with old drugs that aren't used much outside of 3rd world countries...
Disclaimer: my clinical trial experience is in oncology only. Datasets are datasets though and these look good. Better than standard or care at least...
The problem with all the studies referenced so far in this thread is that they were all in-vitro. It's relatively easy to kill stuff in plastic, including a virus. Translating that to humans works very rarely. This appears to be the first report of efficacy in humans and it's pretty fucking encouraging because re-purposing an existing drug is incredibly easy and fast compared to developing something from the ground up.
Hydroxychloroquine has been around for a long time, it's easy to make, and it costs practically nothing. There are some weird toxicities at high dose, mainly ocular, and the recommended dose of 500 mg BID is right on the cusp of where these start to pop-up. It should not be an issue for short courses of treatment and it certainly sucks less than dying.
I don't really know shit about antibiotics so I can't comment about the azithromycin combo...
Chloroquine is the older less efficacious and more toxic cousin. Same mechanism of action but lower activity, at least in-vitro (8x less potent). That means higher doses and more tox and maybe no therapeutic window (that happy range of doses where the drug works against the virus without making your eyeballs melt).
Regardless, this could be huge. Nothing matters until we get human data. Now we have some.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
County Announces New Partnership for Widespread Testing for COVID-19
CONTACT: Susan Lilly, Public Information Officer, San Miguel County
970-729-2028 susanl@sanmiguelsheriff.org
(March 18, 2020) -- San Miguel County, CO – San Miguel County Department of Public Health and Environment announced today, at an emergency Board of County Commissioners meeting, a new partnership for a strategic plan to help mitigate catastrophic consequences of Covid-19 (coronavirus).
San Miguel County is partnering with United Biomedical (UBI) and its subsidiary c19 taking on the COVID-19 pandemic, to be the first in the United States to test an entire county with UBI’s COVID-19 blood test.
The testing is being offered free of charge by UBI and c19 and will be administered by the Public Health Department of San Miguel county, with the goal of detecting and containing community spread, and proviiding a more accurate assessment of disease prevalence.
Testing, in combination with strategic “shelter in-place” public health orders, will provide the best chance to mitigate losses, including loss of life.
Individuals who agree to be tested will receive a simple blood draw by a healthcare provider. Tests will then be sent to a lab with results projected to be available within two days. The test will ideally be repeated in 14 days so that public health officials can gauge if the rate of infection is increasing or decreasing in the county.
“This will drastically advance our ability to assess the presence of the virus in our county and allow us to focus isolation strategies,” Grace Franklin, Director of Public Health, San Miguel County said.
In recent days, our county has seen several critically ill residents requiring intensive hospitalization. In the last 48 hours there have been multiple cases in children under 4 years of age in regional Emergency Departments with serious symptoms concerning for COVID-19.
“We’ve entered a new and concerning phase that requires swift action. We have an opportunity to arrest the spread of COVID-19 and potential loss of life,” Dr. Sharon Grundy, County Medical Officer said.
Because of these recent and concerning events in the county and across our nation, county public health officials decided to implement more aggressive measures to contain the virus and mitigate its devastating consequences.
Goals include:
Save as many lives as possible.
Decrease the amount of the population that becomes severely ill.
Protect health care professionals (HCP) and essential service workers (ESW).
A steady roll out throughout the entire population of San Miguel county.
To that end, new Public Health Orders have been initiated including “sheltering in-place.” This means limiting gatherings of people as necessary to protect public health.
Grace Franklin, Director for the San Miguel County Department of Public Health and Environment said, “We know just testing is not enough to fight this virus. If we invest in the short-term inconveniences of isolation and sheltering in place now, we will save lives.”
Here are the Public Health Orders that take effect 12:01am March 18, 2020 and go through until at least April 3, 2020 at the discretion of the Public Health Director:
Shelter in-place.
Prohibition of all events more than 10 people.
Prohibition of all events at daycare centers, child care centers, home child care center, private schools and day schools, community recreational center, ice rinks, and libraries.
Prohibition of all events at food establishments except for the provision of takeout and delivery of food.
Cease all activities at business facilities in the county except for minimum basic operations and essential services.
Cease operations and reservations to short-term lodging.
All public transportation is considered an event.
Visitors to San Miguel County are directed to return home immediately. All non-resident homeowners are strongly encouraged to leave the county and return to their primary place of residence.
Violators to these orders are subject to criminal and civil charges.
"Our actions now seem exaggerated to some, but let me assure you all, any actions we want to take later will be severely inadequate," Dr. Grundy said.
Logistics including timing and locations are being worked out and will be announced accordingly.

Newport Oregon police department is asking residents to stop calling 911 because they've run out of toilet paper
From their Facebook page
https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/16/us/ne...rnd/index.htmlIt’s hard to believe that we even have to post this. Do not call 9-1-1 just because you ran out of toilet paper. You will survive without our assistance.
In fact, history offers many other options for you in your time of need if you cannot find a roll of your favorite soft, ultra plush two-ply citrus scented tissue.
Seamen used old rope and anchor lines soaked in salt water. Ancient Romans used a sea sponge on a stick, also soaked in salt water. We are a coastal town. We have an abundance of salt water available. Sea shells were also used.
Mayans used corn cobs. Colonial Americans also used the core of the cob. Farmers not only used corn cobs, but used pages from the Farmers Almanac. Many Americans took advantage of the numerous pages torn from free catalogs such as Sears and Roebuck. The Sears Christmas catalog, four times thicker than the normal catalog, could get a family of three wiped clean from December through Valentine’s Day; or Saint Patrick’s Day if they were frugal.
Then, of course, there are always alternatives to toilet paper. Grocery receipts, newspaper, cloth rags, lace, cotton balls, and that empty toilet paper roll sitting on the holder right now. Plus, there are a variety of leaves you can safely use. Mother Earth News magazine will even tell you how to make your own wipes using fifteen different leaves. When all else fails, you have magazine pages. Start saving those catalogs you get in the mail that you usually toss into the recycle bin. Be resourceful. Be patient. There is a TP shortage. This too shall pass. Just don’t call 9-1-1. We cannot bring you toilet paper.
How did they get ahold of that many tests? (San Miguel)

I really hope that this is legit.
My housemate is not really practicing social distancing very well. Goes over to his buddies every evening after work and drinks and smokes cigarettes . Buddy lives in a house with an 80 yo gent and 50 yo woman.
Question I've been debating with myself today is, do I just say something to him? Or give him an ultimatum?
What say you all?
Change locks while he is out?
