I've got a story about something like that. My one buddy came home from work wasted with the munchies,. He put some home fries on the stove and promptly passed out on the couch. Fortunately the other buddy and I showed up to deal with the smoke alarm going off to a completely smoke filled apartment. The whole sketchy row of buildings did not catch on fire. Place would have been a deathtrap.

First thing's first. Go get your battery tested. Especially with our finicky Euro cars, if a car has a battery that may start the car just fine, but in reality is a bit low on volts, then it can cause all sorts of wackiness like that. Often times the symptom being getting tons of warning lights at once.

That would indeed be preferable. Haha. Also worth testing out your alternator while you're at it. I've also seen it where one of those systems had a blown fuse or a loose wire or something super simple, but it tripped all those warnings like mad but when the little problem was resolved they all go away.

Either way, the fact that your dash is lighting up like a Christmas tree all at once tells me it's likely something pretty simple (like a battery). Good luck!

Ugh. I feel your pain. I swear, if the US had licensing standards like ze Germans do, at least 80% of our drivers would lose their driving privileges, and deservedly so. Over there, they're required to know all that stuff. Oh, and if you can't drive stick, you get stuck with a restricted license. Haha.

Blows my mind how clueless drivers (my wife included) can be and still be legally authorized to operate a motor vehicle. Also, what is it with women and running the tank til its bone dry? Seems nearly every time I get in the car she's been driving, I get a low fuel light the second I start the car. AAARRRRGGGHH!!!! She's run out more than once. Again, with the German model, that sort of nonsense carries actual penalties for being such a knucklehead.

Check engine line has been coming on and going off randomly since last fall. Its an older Tacoma so the issue is emissions related. Shop ran some quick tests late last year and couldn't find anything wrong. I'm coming up on my 2-year smog test end of this year. If there are any active error codes it is an automatic fail and I have to spend money to fix whatever is wrong. Whatever the cost.... Which is very annoying. Especially when you see commercial trucks and bro dozers everywhere spewing black smoke.

My sister years ago driving my mom's '64 VW bug. Oil light comes on and she just keeps driving it...no idea how long it was on for, but it finally heat seized the motor going down the highway. That sucked. I got my license about a month later and no VW to drive.

That's not how it works. The car has to run through the on board emissions test to pass a smog test. If you clear the code, the smog shop will tell you to come back once the car has run through the test- usually about 30 miles.

Never been an issue for me! (This was on my old Mazda 3) It was simply a finicky, malfunctioning sensor. Sometimes I'd drive another 1000+ miles before the light would return.

The smog test where they shove the sensor into your tailpipe and do all the thorough testing has been enough proof for me that my car was totally fine in all actuality. Definitely worth a shot to clear the code before spending thousands on resolving the magical intermittent gremlin. Especially on old cars.

Now if you clear the code and it comes right back on? Then yeah, got to dive deeper and fix the problem, but its definitely worth a shot. Also worth pulling your own codes so YOU know what's up before taking it to those idiots at the inspection station trying to force you to do a bunch of possibly unnecessary repairs. Had too many shops try to screw me over to trust them. "Sir, you're CEL's on. It needs XYZ." Always nice to say, "I don't think so. It has a P0XX code. That means it needs this, and not that." Always nice to be armed with information.

Either way, pull the code and know what's up BEFORE going to the inspection station and being at their mercy.
