steps in boats suck. you do not want to be going up and down them repeatedly especially when underway. Think of your poor wife trying to walk up those stairs carrying a plate of appetizers up to you and your drunk buddies on the back deck. with three staterooms this boat is supposedly set up for entertaining. Usually that means time in the galley. Why would you want to spend it below deck without even a window to look out. For a retirement boat do you really need to go that fast? I know you need to have money to afford this. Even the richest guy I know with a boat bitches about his fuel bill. I think it as lot more functional. This shit is out of my league but I enjoy looking at them and have not ruled out a more affordable version in my future.

Most importantly, beyond all that, I can imagine at that exact moment I'd be wondering why I was even there, who these drunk morons really are, why this woman is even waiting on me, and if she's going to cut me in my sleep for doing so, why I paid so much money to be in this exact predicament, and really, why, God why, did I ever let them sell the Benetau 505 so I could just leave all these morons dockside on the setting horizon behind me where they'd be more comfortable?

Every boat's a compromise. That galley-down configuration is pretty typical for an express boat. That boat isn't really optimized to be a liveaboard. If I was going to live on a boat I'd want something more like this Nordhavn.

Family friend has a Nordhavn 72. Spent some time on it. It’s more boat than what I’d want to manage (if in position to afford) but what a vessel. He’s got a rich navy hull but the lighter brighter blue one is the shit. A dealership in Anacortes WA has a big daddy in light blue on dry dock after list damage/complete loss on maiden launch. At least that’s what I was told. Hate to be that guy

Nordhavn and Northern Marine are two completely different boat builders. The Northern Marine builds are off the old Delta Marine molds (after Delta quit building anything under 120ft except for the occasional super 58 seiner)

Can’t remember exactly but, after falling into a you tube hole of watching ship launch fails I found some comments from the guy who was some type of manager at that yard.

He claimed the design wasn’t right from the start and the yard wouldn’t listen to him.... or the owner wouldn’t listen to him.. they pushed the project too fast and things weren’t done right...

They fired him... then he got the last laugh when that happened

tl;dr

Aft port was 8000 pounds heavier than aft starboard due to a transcription error on the part of New World, the builder. Additionally, New World claimed 25 LT of ballast added, but only 16.6 LT of ballast was actually added. In 2011 New World bought the boat frame, which was originally built in 2002, and royally fucked it up. I'm sure the guy they sold it to thought he was getting a deal. New World is now in receiver"ship".

Upon launch the forward dolly was 2 feet off center, likely because the boat was so crunked weight wise, that if they put it on centre the boat would have fallen off the dolly on dry land.


I'm sure that'll buff right out.
