I'm learning from the discussion, thanks! But the very nature of this quote is what I'm missing...
going to have trouble getting most/many smart devices to run on an Ad Hoc network
My phone connects directly to the smart plug by my selecting its SSID from the phone's wifi settings screen. At this point I tell it something (my router's SSID and its password), which causes it to do something (attach itself). Why is that so easy, and yet telling it something even easier (toggle yourself) is..."going to have trouble"?

Because they aren't made with adhoc networks in mind.

    Just get a wifi router.

So can I eliminate my Fios entirely and just go with our AT&T cell service? We have unlimited data so if we had a tablet to run something like Prime video, YouTube TV, Netflix or Hulu can we pretty much watch most channels and other stuff? One or two of those services would be less than half what we're spending for the Fios bundle with a couple of 'premium' channels that we pretty much never watch.

Just picked up a modem and router in preparation of cancelling my service on March 8th (end of my current contract). Can't wait to save $120 every month.

Those are internet based so what are you going to use for internet service?

I'm wondering if 4G LTE cell service is sufficient.

I've been using hulu+ ($40) with fiber which works great and provides a few local channels I can't normally get here in the backwoods of vt.
I really dig the olympic channel and snbc coverage of skiing and winter sports, which More then makes up for the loss of NFL network.

We did too. Best option in our area.
But we cancelled cable last summer and I really haven't missed it. Watched FB, BB and other stuff with apps, but have been watching much less TV than last summer and don't really miss it. Used to come home and flip on TV and get sucked in to the mindlessness. Now my mindlessness goes elsewhere...like TGR.

we have Comcast for internet. It only costs a few extra bucks to have basic cable so we have that. But it costs over $100/mo now. And that's fucking ridiculous.

We finally dropped comcast for cable. Comcast for internet around $65, Youtube tv for $40. Yeah, it's a $100 but you get a million sports channels and movies, which I like. Plus all the regular cable channels.

Some places comcast doesn't have much competition and some places it does.

Bundled or by itself? Unless its standalone, that's not impressive

I have a couple neighbors that paid for one of those bill reduction services and it worked out well for them. Comcast generally charges whatever they want, but the cutting services know the tricks available and seem to have success. At worst, you're not wasting the time on the phone, they are

I'm two houses away from Google Fiber. It kills me. Can't wait for 5G internet at home. Even if Verizon 5g service is $150/month, I'm ditching Comcast for it.

You can try a few things- first most is check to see if the ISP has a slower entry level option. You can negotiate sometimes with their retention department, but at some point the retention department will usually only do 2 things, either if they truly think you are serious about leaving their internet service completely, sometimes they will offer a special or introductory deal again. Sometimes though they will call your bluff and you do have to drop or play the new customer game (put internet only in your wife's name, with enough different information sometimes they will allow it to be on their intro new customer offer again. Otherwise check for alternatives- local ISP or Toast Internet, telephone company offers or 4G cellular (but each could be either data caps, slower speeds or some other possible drawback too.

You could try a wifi extender if the neighbor is in line of site. Has Google refused to extend it to your property?

It's been said before. I'll say it again. Getting your internet from Comcast or other souless cable TV company of your area and then getting your TV from another service is not "ditching cable". It is called lowering your cost. Oh, and watching cable TV channels through an internet service instead of directly from the cable provider? That's not ditching cable either. It might be a smart consumer move, however, you are still watching the same shit. Get off my lawn.

Google Fiber ends at the SLC city limits, I'm 2 houses outside the limits. I think they are expanding to entire neighborhoods now, and not just single houses so I haven't asked.

Is there a general consensus on IPTV? I cut the cord long ago, use an antenna for OTA and have Netflix. It's been ok, but I severely missed having Turner Classic Movies and recently discovered a sport called 'baseball' that I quite enjoy watching.

Wouldn't say I've gotten bit by the home theater bug but I've got a decent comfortable set up that I'm spending more time with.

Trying IPTV (BeastTV) for a month and love it. Something like 2600 channels. Movies, TCM of course, sports, even a XXX section (I've had a peak a few times and it's embarrassingly bad, not that I'm a critic).

But yeah we all will make our choices regarding piracy. Some are dead against it - some simply don't care - I find most people are somewhere in between.

But IPTV is on another level - I'm paying some guy to 'harvest' all these channels illegally and give me access to them - that's really really greasy..

Damn. I just got off the phone with Verizon and keeping just internet doesn't make sense. We have an old router that is no longer supported so have to upgrade and have to upgrade the outside service box for a large one time fee. Between all of that and having to pay for at least one streaming service brings it to within a few dollars of what we're paying now for tv, phone and internet. They also won't let me just sign a new contract because of the old service box and unsupported router so just renewing will cost nearly $200 plus $198/mo. Comcast costs more and those are the only two choices. We were going to go with DirecTv last summer but the neighbor won't cut down a half dozen trees so we can't get a good line of sight. I can't wait for 5G to come here, it sure will be nice when there is another way to get internet that's reasonably fast and reliable without being tied to these legacy companies that have us by the balls.
