Heavenly has been balls deep, amazing runs all day so far. Crowded but not too bad. Opened powder bowl, hopefully more later

Yes but there has been bombs going off since like 4am. I'm staying over in Alpine Meadows valley and those 4am bombs were shaking the bed.
TLDR; Ski faster. Quit breathing. Don't crash.

Gazex and/or avalauncher bombs. No hand charges until daylight. Sugar Bowl bombed all morning. Looks like they managed to get everything open. Must have been a great day for the people staying on the mountain, with old 40 and 80 closed.

Take a second look at the definitions for each danger level. https://utahavalanchecenter.org/avalanche-danger-scale. Probably one of the main factors for decreasing it from "High" to "Considerable" is that once it stops snowing heavily the likelihood of natural avalanches in most areas decreases. While wind transport can load slopes much faster than regular snow fall and cause natural avalanches to be likely, the types of terrain this can happen on is more limited (i.e. it snows on every aspect above and below tree line while wind transport is relatively less pervasive), which falls more under the definition of Considerable. I've found it super helpful to go to the SAC events and chat with their people. They are quite friendly and respond quite well to questions like "Why was the forecast ________ this day?".

Kind of too deep for the mellow terrain we toured in today, but tomorrow will be excellent+. I didn't see any instabilities and can't see any signs of natural slides on Stevens, which is pretty close to here and has some steeper terrain.

KW is a strange place. We got out late and lined up at 6 after enjoying a nice slow morning of digging out the house and cars. Insanely deep everywhere. Anytime I skied untracked, I had to keep my mouth shut for fear of literally choking on powder. Mostly skied the cut up with wife and kid. Just too deep for him in the untracked. But due to the place being empty, it was easy to pick off scraps and the two runs I did peal off for were top to bottom untracked shoulder high to overhead gloriousness. At 11ish and 1:30.

The. They closed all lifts at 3PM because the pass opened. Seriously, WTF. Heard some lifty yelling at a questioning customer, “Do you want to get stuck here? !?” Dude was like, yeah. Tomorrow looks great.

6 and 10 both turned. So it’s not worth coming this way tomorrow anyway. Squaw and Alpine will be so sick.

Snowing again this afternoon. Gonna go dig out the parking pad, tidy up the steps and maybe skin a meadow for some exercise.

you must be crazy Kirkwood never opened? they can't get it going with this much snow, and they would certainly never do it for just the few trapped people when all the roads are closed. and even if they did get something open, it'd probably be just a small strip of terrain on a lower lift.

It's almost as if all of us who have been consistently riding in the backcountry around Tahoe have maybe read that before? Again, it was mentioned that the report came in with a significantly lower snowfall total than just about everyone else in the area (both anecdotal and resort-based), so it was pretty damn suspect in that context. Especially with 3-4 feet of snow and a shit ton of wind above treeline. And really, who cares? I will make my decisions on a considerable day pretty darn close to a high advisory day.

More often than not folks on this thread would say SAC is over-conservative, so when the collective here thinks it should be high and not considerable that actually means *more* to me than the actual advisory, given how much BC experience is around here on a daily basis. And I'm not throwing any shade towards SAC - they have to cover a pretty huge range with a lot of variation, especially when it comes to elevation differences.

Best day in a while at SB. Disney popped at 9:45, Lincoln at 12:30. Roads stayed closed so just Summit locals and whoever else could sneak up. Still plenty of freshies at 2 when my legs gave out and I went home to eat lunch and shovel (again).

Which sucks cause I'm heading there tomorrow, grr why couldn't they have stayed closed today like everyone else haha. Oh well respect for getting shit open during an "isolation event"
No they did open. You and 100 of your closest #isolationevent friends got 2 lifts worth of fresh today. They just kept progressively opening zones: 6 chair > sentinel bowl and traverse > 6 ridge to wagon wheel > chair 10 > palisades bowl.

The same crew of 100 just lining up for the new zone and hitting it fresh. Nonstop fresh until the end of the day. Sort of the regular program for when you're trapped in the fun sandwich.

Great time today at Heavenly. The Face and Gun Barrel were amazing with 3 feet of fresh. Pinnacles in the afternoon were a lot of fun, too. Trip got cut short when I hip checked a boulder in the Hogsback. Glad it was the last run of the day.

Tomorrow is going to suck. You’ll end up needing to take the high T to get anything like untracked tits deep. And with those few inches over the last few hour, and the moderate ridge top winds, there will be some delays as they will have to run avi routed again due to the fresh snow. Ugh. And the roads will likely be open, which apparently means they will need to shut down all the lifts.

Ya right. I was just making it up. Today sucked. Only got the carpet running.

Lookin forward to skiing the refresh tomorrow with the kiddo. Today was a challenge for him. But he is looking forward to some Thunder Saddle runs tomorrow. So glad we decided on driving out Monday. Gonna be pretty up here the next two days.

What I find so odd is that most of the station data that they use to generate the forecast was showing 16-24 inches over 24 hrs. Glimpsing through a chunk of the data this morning, I only noticed the CSS site showing higher quantity.

Sugar Bowl delivered today. I do not understand how Squaw could not open anything due to "extreme avalanche danger" but Sugar Bowl can open Lincoln and Disney? It makes no sense to me.
Anyway, fun skiing when not too many people are there.
