Fellow employees that are addicted to a combination of adderall, gummies, and beer. Holy moody.

Friends of ours with an old cabin recently extensively upgraded having electric problems. PUD came out this morning, found the Romex sheaths starting to burn, cut the wires to the house, contractor on the way. Just got a text--they're pleased that they were able to get their generator started, so they have power. Question is--for how long will they have a house. These people are both retired engineers.

If it's EE, they should write their alma mater to ask for their parent's money back.

Update--CO monitor went off. As of a half hour ago they were still alive.
I don't know why they keep calling us for advice, maybe they don't know a dentist to call.

    so the generator is inside?

ok seriously... the circuit breaker panel exists to protect the wires. If the romex was burning, at least one branch circuit, or the box itself is wired is wrong. Changing the feed source won't change that.

I have seen plenty of places wired with 14 gauge wire that have 20 amp breakers because the breaker tripped too much.

Box is undersized and apparently there are loose connections. When they remodeled a few years ago they refused to let the contractor upgrade the service. Why he agreed to that I have no idea, but he's out there today upgrading the main panel so I guess he feels guilty about it.

Two local pizza shops aren't delivering. WTF? ETA: apparently it was because traffic was a nightmare so I'll give them a pass.

Seriously. In my experience as a contractor, what I've learned is that people are willing to toss endless amounts of money on things that can be seen, but will totally be cheap asses on structural or underlying things that they can't show off to their friends.

Case in point. Working on baller homes around Big Sky, the homeowners (typically the wives) would too often essentially give a blank check to the interior designers, for which like half the budget would be blown on a super expensive and ornate entry light, sculpture, or art piece. Oh, but the wiring for the home? "Yeah, I don't want to spend more than about tree fitty on that." "What?! It costs X amount just to do a complete infrastructure overhaul? You're out of your damn mind! You're fired." Lol

Rich people were always the cheapest of the cheap asses when it comes to structural things that actually freaking matter. I always felt bad for the plumbers and electricians I worked with. Always expected to pull a rabbit out of their hats. Oh, but half a million for an entry chandelier? "Meh, no problem. Go get my checkbook, honey."

Not all people listening to music through external speakers are the notorious newschoolers. Graybeard today on the chair listening to the Dead on his phone, out loud, not through ear buds. Nice enough guy otherwise. (I know we had a thread about this; I couldn't find it.)

Dealing with people in other countries. Think the DMV likes red tape and pointless bullshit? Try dealing with people in India. Or the middle east. Holy fuck....

Yeah but Newschoolers: this weekend 5-6 dudes come down a bump run while we are standing around talking. All arms and legs, flailing and falling everywhere, boards and skis, just like a cartoon of idiocy. Rocking the bluetooth, total crap. We literally gaped at the Jong’s for a little bit then got the hell out of there. You could hear that crap way too far away. They were a menace to body, eyes, ears and mind. Dude, bro, rad.

But it it was so cliche it was comical.

Oh, man, so true. And people from Russia or other Eastern Bloc countries REALLY take pride in their bureaucratic powers. Was dating a Russian girl once who had to get her Visa renewed so I took her to the Russian Consulate. Even though she came well prepared, the grumpy dude at the counter started yelling at her and literally threw the forms back at her, papers flying all over the place. We left with her in tears and I asked her what the guy said. She said all he was pissed off about was that she was evidently supposed to have everything typed out (not hand written) and must be done in triplicate. So the next stop was a nearby Kinkos to take care of that and all was well. But holy crap, dude flew off the handle for something that was just his own nit-pickiness since it wasn't even part of the instructions on the forms. Some power tripping mofos out there for sure. I've dealt with that a bit myself in some of the -stan countries like Uzbekistan (been to 4 out of the 7 stans). Those people love them some pointless red tape, but at least they were a bit friendlier about it. than that Russian dick.

My wife and I were at the Vatican museum many years ago. We were literally the first people in line when it opened (that tells you how long ago it was). We go up to the guy selling tickets and I hand him a 50,000 Lira note to pay for 2 10,000 Lira tickets. The old guy starts screaming at me, waving his arms frantically. I thought he was going to have a stroke. This went on for minutes until I figured out the problem, took back the 50,000 and gave him a 20,000.

Re Russians--in some multicultural medicine course I took they talked about the Russians. They tend to be difficult patients, always demanding stuff, trying to game the system to get care that they can easily get without doing that, but it's what they had to do to get care in Russia. The fact that access to care in Russia is worse than here--that's something.

Airplane boarding instructions piped into my headset after I’m already seated and plugged into inflight entertainment. Also they blare it loud totally disregarding your volume setting. If I want to listen I’ll take my headphones off.
