$1,800 car repair bills

Car trouble on road trips. Have now had issues on two trips in a row. A couple weeks ago had a coil pack and sparkplug go out while out of town while not exactly near a shop or parts store. Last week in AZ had rear axle seals fail while out camping/riding. Limped into nearest town and was told "can't get to it til after T-giving". Fortunately they were able to reschedule other jobs and got it done before the holiday.

And the constant road trip complaint - fucking big rigs who pull out in front of you last second as you're about to overtake them, blocking the freeway as they crawl past whatever is in the other lane.

It annoys me that they don't make front-load washing machines under 38" tall any more. And we have a counter built for a 36" tall machine to fit under. And we need a new machine. A new washer is in danger of morphing into a remodeling project. I'm scrambling for a Plan B.

We put the washer and drier at the end of the counter against the wall, and bumped the counter up the 2" at that spot. It's no big deal since it's the laundry/mud room, nobody ever even noticed, and it looks fine if done right.

It also annoys me that the woman my wife got to watch the dogs for a weekend while we went away decided to wash her horse blankets and killed what was a perfectly fine washer, but that's another story.

Yeah it was definitely stupid in retrospect but all the front-load washers were about the same height when we built the place, we didn't build it with a particular brand in mind, that's just how big they were, and even so we left some space, it wasn't shoehorned in there by any means, there's a pretty big gap above the washer to the bottom of the counter. It just never occurred to us that every front load washer would suddenly be 38" tall or more, and it still puzzles me why they are. They're still 27" wide and they're still the same depth, they're all just taller for some reason.

A lot of older models suffered from musty smells if you didn't keep them clean enough. I think a lot of the newer models now have a cleanout door, that allows you to drain the shitty water and clean the trap that is under the washer. Boosting the washer up 2 inches give more space for this.
I've also noticed that the drums in many of the new front load washers aren't perfectly horizontal but are actually tipped back a bit. That would also require a bit more height.

1st world thread? Isn't that like the first rules of building? Don't build around a specific appliance? We had a similar issue with refrigerators. The previous owners didn't take this type of thing into account when they remodeled. Removing the vertical end piece was easy. It looks sort of funny though and we are still limited regarding fridge size if we don't want it to block a doorway.

I've got the same problem with my kitchen cabinets. There's an opening clearly intended for a microwave, but there seems to be exactly one microwave on the market that fits the opening (due to the depth), and of course it's about twice the price of any comparable microwave.
